Prof Salman M.S. Sakarwala, who teaches Financial and Management Accounting at Valia School of Management Mumbai, shares his views on how curriculum and coursework play an important role in making students industry-ready. He also shares some ways in which the B-school adapts technology to promote entrepreneurship among students.

Q. What are the salient features of the teaching methodology adopted by your college? How does this differ from others?

Our College does not restrict its teaching to theory-based knowledge but we also provide hands-on practical experiences. We have been encouraged to use student-centric, experiential, and game-based education.

Q.  How are you preparing your students to be Industry ready?

Our students become industry ready as we make them work as a Team, realizing their skills, and improving their Leadership Qualities, through the use of new technology and by updating their curriculum as and when required.

Q. What are the qualities you are looking for in student applicants? What qualities do they need to do well in your course?

1. Passion for the course. 2. Positive Attitude towards the course. 3. Good command of the language. 4. Ability to think out of the box and work independently.

Q. How do you ensure that your course curriculum is up to date and meets industry requirements?

We constantly try to update our curriculum according to industry developments through research. Our curriculum and coursework are in tune with the industry requirements of not only today but also for the future.

Q. Is your college receptive to innovation, technology, science & entrepreneurship? Could you cite some examples of these?

At VSM Mumbai we believe in the process of upgradation as always. Latest developments in technology, entrepreneurship and innovative growth have always been the forte at VSM. We have Interactive lessons and use virtual reality technology.

We, as an educational institution, are well-versed; with the demand requirement of the student and faculty fraternity. As part of the institution’s growth process, our members of faculty use the latest editions of computer technology, the latest gadgets equipped with high-speed internet facilities, presentations by groups and the likes.
