The institutions falling under the control of the Higher Education Department and deemed universities received instructions from the government "to conduct classes online from March 23 onwards with six days working."
Considering the surging COVID-19 cases, the Tamil Nadu government on March 22 asked higher education institutions to switch to the virtual mode of teaching. The government also stated that the semester exams will also be conducted online. The decision was taken during a discussion conducted by Chief Secretary Rajeev Ranjan with Vice Chancellors. Reports suggest that during the discussion all the members "opined that the classes can be conducted online."
Talking about the increasing COVID-19 cases, the GO said, "The Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine has also opined that there are reports emerging of clusters from colleges/hostels and considering trends in many states, these clusters have the potential to spread disease in their place of residence and surrounding community."
Subsequently, the institutions falling under the control of the Higher Education Department and deemed universities received instructions from the government "to conduct classes online from March 23 onwards with six days working." It further added, “All practical classes shall be completed before March 31 and the semester examination will be (held) online." The government had in December 2020 allowed the functioning of final year classes and for all others since February this year.
With the increasing COVID-19 spread in the state, the Tamil Nadu government also ordered the closure of schools for classes 9, 10 and 11 from Monday until further orders. The academic activities started getting back to normal after witnessing a declining trend in the cases throughout February. However, with the increasing numbers, state governments across the country have started taking necessary actions in advance.
