University Grants Commission (UGC) on May 27 directed 127 ‘Deemed to be University’ to restrain from using the word university with their name in any manner. For informational purposes, the commission also released the list of 127 institutions of higher education which are declared as Deemed to be Universities.
According to the notice released by the Commission, the institutes are not allowed to use the term “University” in their advertisements, website, website addresses, e-mail addresses, letterheads, communications, hoardings, etc, UGC also said, “failing which the commission will take necessary action against the Deemed to be University.”
“Instead, the Institution may mention the word “Deemed to be University” within parenthesis suffixed thereto,” reads the UGC’s letter.
The letter written by the Commission to these Universities reads, “No institution, whether a corporate body or not, other than a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act shall be entitled to have the word “University” associated with its name in any manner whatsoever.”
The list of 127 “deemed to Universities” include names such as Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM), Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Indian Law Institute, Bhagwandas Road, New Delhi-110 001, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Musicology, National Museum, National Brain Research Centre, Haryana, Punjab Engineering College, Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Choglamsar, Leh (Ladakh), Jammu & Kashmir and more.
