Professor Mukesh Sehrawat, Head of the Department of Management Studies at Harlal Institute of Management and Technology, explains in-depth about the 'Learning by Doing' strategy in an interview with Shiksha.com. The institute is aware of the changing market requirements and has tailored its curriculum to help students become industry-ready. Professor Sehrawat goes into great length about the necessity of entrepreneurial abilities in management students, as well as how the institute has worked to instil these qualities in students.

Prof. Sehrawat is an adaptable marketing and sales expert with over 22 years of academic and industry experience in managing and achieving market growth.

Q: What are the salient features of the teaching methodology adopted by your college? How does this differ from others?

A: We are dealing with a DIY generation that’s why ‘Learning by doing’ is an integral part of our teaching pedagogy. Institute focuses on the student-centric learning process rather than faculty-centric or curriculum-centric teaching. With two decades of experience in management education, we understand learning is an outcome of the overall environment.

Q: How are you preparing your students to be Industry ready?

A: Our Institution has a unique mentor-mentee program wherein one academic and one industry mentor is allocated to each student for uninterrupted guidance and support. On top of it, we have tie-ups with esteemed companies which offer live projects, research projects and a handful of corporate working experience to make them industry-ready.

Q: What are the qualities you are looking for in student applicants? What qualities do they need to do well in your course?

A: I don’t want to scare my prospective students by jotting down a long list of qualities. As an Institution, we know everyone has talent and we are there to nurture that talent. What we seek from our students is just one quality that they should be ready to learn.

Q: How do you ensure that your course curriculum is up to date and meets industry requirements?

A: Our College offers various skill development courses and offers various opportunities to our students for exploring their true potential along with a predesigned University curriculum.

  • Digital Marketing with one to one guidance and handholding
  • Advance Excel certification
  • Diploma in Banking and Finance
  • Regular Industrial Visits
  • Regular interaction with an industry guide
  • Research Projects
  • Live Projects
  • Special focus on PDP and communication skills

Q: What are the greatest strength of your college?

A: As our institute has many wings and my part is ‘Management’. We cultivate entrepreneurial qualities in our students. Our students create buzz and I can say out of every ten students we have at least 2 to 3 students who are galloping in the field of entrepreneurship. Our philosophy is very simple to create an environment where all types of professionals flourish and the resultant our esteemed Alumni’s are job givers rather than job seekers.
