Women Journalist: Proving Milestones In Profession

3 mins readUpdated on Aug 26, 2022 19:28 IST

WOMEN is a word which reflects many emotions and celebrating womanhood is a big question in various professional fields. In contemporary world, women are playing vital role in building their career in professional field of mass communication & journalism. Women are dedicating their professional life with credible performances in various fields such as politics, journalism, bollywood, defense and many more. Whether it is media or any other filed women’s are ruling all over the world, history always reflects the sacrifices and struggles of women in this world. Empowering women is not only about gender discrimination it’s also about how we support women in every field such as in the case of world journalism. Let’s focus on some of the historical events related with glorifying the image of women in this respective field:-

The first female journalist has been referred to as Fredrika Runeberg, who wrote several incredible poems and articles in Helsingfors Morgonblad under the name of her spouse Johan Ludvig Runeberg in the 1830s. She was a pioneer of Finnish historical fiction and one of the first woman journalists in Finland. She started the legacy of women in journalism so that women in future can also increase the heat by writing their own thoughts in distinct paper & so that it can also be published worldwide. As we all know that journalism is a male dominating profession. A global report on the Status of Women in the News Media by the International Women in Media foundation examined more than 500 companies in nearly 60 countries is occupied by men the vast majority of the management jobs and news-gathering positions in most countries. The study also revealed that among the ranks of reporters specifically, men hold nearly two-thirds of the jobs, compared to 36 percent held by women.

If we will discuss on the major aspects of women then we have to focus about women being working drastically in field and covering political, entertainment, social & sports. In Indian journalism, it is seen more as men’s work and being an assertive female reporter can be extremely dangerous. It becomes even more dangerous when female reporters started speaking about corruption & buck against systemic oppression. After getting involved more into politics the threatening game by such power holders started increasing among female jjournalistshighlighting an incident related to this, in 2017 the women of “Khabar Lahariya” from Chitrakoot (UTTAR PRADESH)  were given a stark reminder that the cost of truth can be death. While violence against women is typically not a culturally accepted norm, but it is also not uncommon in our society.
