How I chose my course & college: Pooja Jaiswal
I did my 10+2 from ISC board. My plan was to do MBA. So, I decided to pursue BBA (H) from a reputed institute. I searched many institutes through Shiksha.com. Shiksha has helped me in reaching the best colleges within my budget. Through Shiksha, I was able to learn about the college’s criteria for admission i.e., which college needed CAT, MAT, XAT and other competitive exams. But I gave only one competitive exam i.e., MAT. I directly searched for the institutes that took direct admission or admission through MAT. Then, I found Nopany Institute of Management Studies, which took direct admission. No competitive exams were required to take admission to this institute.
Academic background needed at UG/PG level to be eligible for the course:
BBA is an undergraduate (UG) course which helps you learn about 3 different fields, out of which, you have to choose a major and a minor subject. It can be from any of the subjects like management, finance, human resources, etc. UG is done just after passing 10+2. It is basically a three-year course. This is a course in which you actually learn things which you will apply in your career.
There can be a question in the mind of any student- Why choose BBA?
Basically, everyone sets up their mind about what they want to do in future and what they want to become. In order to become something, we need knowledge in that field. In order to become an engineer, students choose BTech. To become a doctor, students do MBBS. Similarly, BBA is a course which helps you learn about management, finance, and human resources. By studying these three subjects for 2 years, you will come to know which subject is appropriate for you or in which subject you can excel. In the final year, you can choose your specialization accordingly.
Marketing involves learning about the entertainment, promotion, advertisement, sales and many more things. Marketing is a very wide field and there are different roles for people. It is a very interesting subject. If one wants to explore their skills, they should choose marketing.
Finance is another interesting subject in which you learn about various financial components like investment, budget, risk and many more.
HR or Human Resources is the subject I chose as my specialization. I developed an interest in this subject because I like interacting with people and building relationships with them, solving employees’ problems and many more things. In HR, I specialize in recruitment. Recruitment is basically about finding candidates for appropriate jobs which suit them and in which they specialize. It’s like hiring the right candidate for the right job at the right place. To be a good HR person, you just need to have confidence in yourself while talking to the candidates and building relationships. For an HR person, the company’s employees matter the most.
After understanding these courses and learning about them, you get to choose one in which you feel you can build your career.
While you are doing your graduation, you will have to do an internship which can be of a month or two, in which you will learn practical knowledge about the subject which you have chosen. You can do an internship after completing your graduation also. This internship helps you a lot in learning about your specialization course.
In my case, I got a job in recruitment. I learned everything about recruitment, like searching candidates on portals, reviewing their resumes, scheduling their interviews, and after selection, placing them in the companies. I worked there for 6 months and gained lots of practical knowledge. I liked doing recruitment. I never got bored because I interacted with 20-30 candidates daily and interviewed them.
After 6 months, I got placed in a jute company’s head office as an assistant HR executive. Here, I am still learning about the things related to HR, like policies of companies, providing salaries on the basis of their attendance, and giving offer letters, resignation letter, promotion letter and demotion letter. It is taking time to learn because it’s an HR role as a whole, as opposed to just recruitment that I was doing as an intern.
I am also pursuing distance MBA. It’s a two year course. It is a master’s degree and it is important because in MBA, you learn more about your specialization subject. With this degree, there are chances to get promotion. MBA is not only a degree, it’s a key to learning and getting groomed. MBA is done after any UG degree. MBA helps you learn about managerial roles and get managerial roles in any field.
