Considering the delay in the academic calendar and obstructed teaching-learning process due to the ongoing process, the prominent national education boards are mulling to reduce the syllabus further.
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) are preparing to reduce the syllabus for CBSE 10th, CBSE 12th, ICSE and ISC further due to the COVID-19 situation. According to the reports, a CBSE official stated that as the normal classes are not yet started, the syllabus may be reduced further by 20% if the situation persists. However, no decision has been made yet regarding the reduction in syllabus. Boards are waiting for the nod of education ministry before taking a call.
A senior CBSE official while talking to the media stated, "Post 30% reduction in July, there has been no normal classes and if the situation continues like this, there is a likelihood of further reduction of the syllabus for the Board exams. The Board will take a call soon whether the exams are to be conducted based on 70% or 50% of the syllabus." The reports also suggest that both the boards are waiting for the ministry of education's directives before taking a call. “We are waiting for some direction, whether the academic year will be extended so that the syllabus can be completed Then the exams will have to be shifted, probably to May or even later,” said Gerry Arathoon, chief executive, CISCE said.
As the COVID-19 disturbed the academic year 2020-21 and around half academic year has passed without normal classes, so the board may delay in exams this year. However, with the schools remaining closed and classes held in online mode. The standards for online classes vary from school to school, so the board is expecting some physical classes before the conduction of exams. The board will review the situation and then will decide to conduct board exams accordingly. Therefore, the board exam may be shifted to April or May, a senior CBSE official said.
