CBSE Class 9 curriculum from 2022-23 will include the Communicative English subject and Sanskrit will be introduced in CBSE Class 10 from 2023-24.

The Central Board of Secondary Education decided to restore the communicative English and Sanskrit subjects for the students of Classes 9 and 10 according to the National Education Policy (NEP). CBSE Class 9 curriculum from 2022-23 will include the Communicative English subject and Sanskrit will be introduced in CBSE Class 10 from 2023-24. Earlier, English and Sanskrit were a part of the curriculum at two levels in secondary school. However, the two subjects were later discontinued in 2018-19. English was taught at two levels which are Communicative and Core. The communicative level involved content on communication skills and day-to-day language usage while the core focused on literature and writing.

In the official notice issued to the principals of the CBSE schools, the Board said, “In pursuance to recommendation of National Education Policy 2020 regarding availability of all subjects and corresponding assessments at two levels as per the needs and interest of students, CBSE is planning to offer English and Sanskrit at two levels from the Academic year 2022-23 in class IX and subsequently in class X in the year 2023-24. The Board will offer communicative based curricula which CBSE used to offer in these languages till the year 2018 in these languages. As NEP stresses on using an approach to learning that highlights the importance of real life contexts and enabling students to apply their knowledge in real life scenarios, communicative approach to languages would certainly develop the student's competence to communicate in the target language (communicative competence), with an enhanced focus on real-life situations.”

The notice further added, “Schools interested to offer Communicative English and Communicative Sanskrit are requested to fill the attached Google form so that availability of hard bound textbooks can be ensured in the market in addition to soft copies at the website of CBSE. httos://forms.gle/A5hGZTYUbiRTRZBPA. Kindly fill this form before August 31, 2021.”
