A day after CBSE has decided to reduce the syllabus, Gujarat Education Board is also planning to do the same for this academic calendar.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has earlier this week announced that it has reduced the syllabus for classes 9 to 12 by 30 per cent for this academic year. The syllabus has been reduced considering the academic loss students have suffered due to the closure of schools. The schools across the country have been shut in mid-March as a preventive measure to contain the spread of Coronavirus outbreak. With the rising number of coronavirus cases, it is still not decided that when they will reopen. After CBSE, now the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) is now planning to follow the suit. The GSHSEB will also be reducing the syllabus for the similar classes.
While commenting on the same, the Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama told a media house that “Instructions have been passed on to the board (GHSHEB) to work on reducing the syllabus for these classes. Suggestions from subject experts will be sought after which there will be a decision on what has to be retained and what needs to be dropped.”
As per the sources, the state education board has been asked by the department to retain only those contents which is useful for the students in the next classes. The reports also suggest that GSHSEB may reduce the syllabus by 30 per cent for GSEB 10th Board Exam 2021 and GSEB 12th Board Exam 2021.
"A decision in consultation with the state government over the revised course will be soon taken. While unburdening students from the curriculum that can be afforded to be dropped, rationalisation of the syllabus has to done keeping in mind that these are the same students who are going to sit for national entrance examinations in the coming months. So, our effort will be to ensure that students do not miss out on anything which is important,” said GSHSEB Chairman A J Shah.
The decision is likely to be taken within a week. The educationists have already conducted one webinar on Monday to discuss the possibilities to reduce the syllabus. However, the educationists are of the view that the loss in teaching hours due to the Covid-19 pandemic for students in Gujarat will be comparatively less than that for the CBSE students. As the academic session in the state board schools commences from June unlike April in CBSE schools, the state board schools still have more time left in hand.
