While the colleges were under the affiliation of Bharathidasan University, it was not required to take permission from AICTE for MBA as the university had already secured an order from the Supreme Court to that effect years ago.

Disappointment is prevailing among several thousands of students in the newly-converted government arts and science colleges that were earlier constituent units of Bharathidasan University due to the abrupt closure of MBA programme. Student representatives told the Hindu that after the conversion process, the college heads are reluctant to approach the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to continue with the programme. While the colleges were under the affiliation of Bharathidasan University, it was not required to take permission from AICTE for MBA as the university had already secured an order from the Supreme Court to that effect years ago. Now, it is the responsibility of college heads and the Directorate of Collegiate Education for continuing with the MBA programme in the interests of students.

In Tamil Nadu, MBA and MCA seats are being filled based on TANCET Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test conducted by Anna University. The same factor is being emphasised by the Directorate of Collegiate Education. In order to continue the MBA programme, some students of Government Arts and Science College, Lalgudi also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister MK Stalin seeking his intervention in the matter. Being a constituent unit of Bharathidasan University in 2011, the college offered five PG programmes: MA Tamil, MA English, MBA, MCom and MSc Computer Science. The MBA programme was closed with effect from 2019.

The memorandum signed by around 50 students stated that the government must permit the college to offer the programme during 2021-22 in the interests of students in rural parts. According to the faculty, it is still not too late for the college heads to approach the AICTE for approval. Laboratory requirements are not needed for MBA programme. Teaching faculty, learning materials and classroom are all that are required for MBA programme. According to media reports, the teachers want college heads not to lose time in arranging for inspection by AICTE team for resumption of MBA programme.
