The University Grants Commission has given nod to 17 universities across the country to offer various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in online mode. These universities can start offering courses from the upcoming academic session in November 2021.

In addition to over three dozen universities that were given permission to start offering courses in online mode without prior approval from the UGC, 17 more institutions have been allowed to do so.

There are as many as eight universities from Tamil Nadu in the list, which have been allowed to offer online programmes, with names like Anna University, Bharat Institute of Higher Education Research and Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute.

The universities will offer courses like MBA, BBA, Mass Communication, B.Com and regular Bachelor of Arts in online mode.

According to the UGC Online and Distance Learning Regulations, Higher Educational Institutions will be eligible to offer Online Programmes if they have been in existence for at least five years and are accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a valid minimum score of 3.26 on a 4-point scale; and should be in the top-100 in overall category in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for at least two years in the previous three years.

UGC had invited online applications from all entitled HEls willing to offer programmes under online mode from 2021-22, the academic session beginning July 2021 (revised as November 2021). Each of the HEIs was required to submit an affidavit for ensuring compliance to all the provisions of the University Grants Commission (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 and its amendments.

HEI shall abide by the conditions such as the number of seats, valid academic year etc. mentioned in the relevant Regulatory Authority letter.

Earlier this year, the UGC also allowed universities to offer around 40 percent of courses per semester through online mode using the SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) platform.
