Q:   What if I can't get into IIT Kanpur for BTech?

A:

Not getting into IIT Kanpur or any other top IIT should not be considered an end to a student’s career. While IIT Kanpur average package is INR 18.14 LPA for its 2023 placements batch, can IIT Kanpur guarantee the same for each and every student of the batch? The answer is no. What truly matters is a student’s dream to pursue a career in Engineering and as long as they are ready to work on their learning and are focused towards achieving their goal, they must not feel defeated in case of not getting into IIT Kanpur.

Additionally, students always have an option to go for other good private and government universities and colleges to pursue their BTech degree. Some of these options are as follows:

Q:   Is there a provision of pursuing an integrated BTech degree at IIT Kanpur?

A:

Yes, IIT Kanpur also offers an option of a dual degree, i.e., Bachelors-Masters Dual Degree to the students. A student earns both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at the end of this five-year course. The dual degree programme has three categories:

  • Category A: In this case, both degrees are in the same discipline/department. Example: BTech-M Tech.
  • Category B: This is a two-discipline/ department programme where the bachelor’s degree is in the parent discipline/ department and the master’s degree is in a different discipline/ department. Thus, three combinations are possible in this category, ex: BTech-M Tech, BTech-MS and BTech-MDes. Students can choose any one of the aforementioned combinations.
  • Category C: In this case, the bachelor’s degree is in the parent discipline/ department and the master’s degree is MBA. Ex: BTech-MBA.

A:

Candidates preparing for IITs are only required to appear for the JEE Advanced entrance exam after qualifying JEE Main. Students who who secure above the 98th percentile in JEE Main 2024 Session 2 should start preparing for JEE Advanced 2025 immediately. Those who score between 95th and 98th percentile should focus on improving their JEE Main score by taking multiple mock tests and practicing previous year's question papers. B.Tech. in Civil Engineering - Batch of 2026
4.2

Great college life and a great start to your career.
Placements: 85% of students got placed. The highest package is about 50 LPA, and the least is about 6 LPA. Top recruiting companies are BHEL, NTPC, and AECOM, and the roles offered are structural engineer, site engineer, and project manager. About 70% of students got internships in civil engineering.
Infrastructure: The facilities, like labs, classrooms, and libraries, are fully furnished and have central AC. Hostel rooms are typical sarkari hostels and are old buildings with small rooms. The mess food is average, but canteen food is good. Other facilities like medical, sports, and cultural are excellent.
Faculty: The teachers are highly qualified and knowledgeable. We have the most flexible curriculum and can even do courses in other departments and get minors and majors in them. The courses of the civil department are great and definitely make us industry ready. The exams are a little difficult, but mostly people pass; grades might get compromised.

Very good infrastructure of the campus. Best professors and high packages.
Placements: Over 85% of students were placed by the end of phase 1 of the placement drive. The highest package was 1.43 crores per annum (international), 1.12 crores per annum (India); the average was 20–25 LPA; the lowest was 2.5 LPA. Top recruiting companies were Microsoft, Google, JLR, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors, ITC, and BCG. About 75% of the students got internships in companies like Axxela, Google, Microsoft, JP Morgan, Graviton, Oracle, and Texas Instruments. The roles were mainly for quant and software engineers.
Infrastructure: Our classrooms are very big, fully air-conditioned, and have smart panels. There are 20 lecture halls, each with a varied capacity ranging from 150 to 1,200 students. The academic area has Wi-Fi all around. The hostels are very old yet maintained properly. The mess is good; the quality of food is good; you can never complain about it.
Faculty: The professors are more than qualified. They are very helpful; some are very good at teaching. The teaching quality is excellent. One cannot complain about the teaching style and curriculum. But with good teachers come even harder exams. The exams are very tough in the mechanical department.

The reality of IIT Kanpur.
Placements: In my department, approximately 90% of placements occur on campus. The highest package this time offered was 85 LPA, the lowest was 10 LPA, and the average was 19 LPA. Dr. Reddy and Axxella are the main recruiters during the placements in our course. The internship number is not so good but around 50% of students get the internship. I have no idea about the role but it depends on which area students want to go to.
Infrastructure: In my department, there is a separate chemical engineering building and lab, which are similar to industries but on a very small level. In the labs, you will find too many desktops, and Wi-Fi is always there and we have Asia's second-largest library in IIT Kanpur. The hostel quality is good but it remains good in the first year only and after the first year, the quality of the rooms is not so good. And in every hall, there is a canteen and a gym. In the whole of IIT Kanpur, there is only one medical center.
Faculty: The faculty and teachers are very helpful but not all of them. There is always some teacher who does not push the students. Most of the professors are well-educated and good. Teaching done on the smart board so teaching quality is very good. Yes, the courses that we have studied can make one 90% ready to join the industry. Semester exam are always very tough in IIT Kanpur and very rigorous.
Other: I chose this course on the basis of my rank and the main thing is that this college is close to my hometown so I chose this course here. The campus life is good; you will find fests, clubs and sports in which you can participate according to your hobby.

Absolutely satisfied because of the environment and lifestyle of the college; best placement in 2022
Placements: 100% students placed in Maths (90% if you take non-willing). The highest 1.2 Cr Rubrik USA, the lowest 10 Lacs, something average 20 LPA. All software companies and high-paying HFTs (Alpha Freo, Graviton, etc.) are open for Maths (based on GDP/CPI) as it is a circuit branch. Internships on campus were 60-70%, but off-campus almost everyone, and again in startups, and in MNCs mostly startups. Roles include Software Engineer, Quantitative Analyst.
Infrastructure: Best facilities including PK Kelkar Library, computer center, student lounge with high-speed internet, and all comforts to study peacefully. New classrooms which were built are more infrastructurally well-equipped with the latest teaching devices as compared to the classrooms where Maths classes take place. Good quality food and the mess secretary is always there to resolve any dispute related to the menu and quality. Medical facilities are awesome; on-demand ambulance service is even available at midnight. Sports and games are well encouraged; there is even one FEAT which our institute organizes for sports, that is, Udhghosh. Canteens are open 24/7 during exams.
Faculty: Teachers are highly qualified. One of my teachers, from whom I studied cryptographs, was a pioneer in his field and received a golden prize equivalent to the Nobel Prize. Even professors of mathematics are highly knowledgeable and conceptually apt. Exceptions are everywhere, as some teachers are not that good in their teaching skills, although there is no doubt about their academic skills. In my course, it makes you research-ready, but there is a facility in our college to choose courses via open electives to study courses of your choice and career-friendly courses. So, it is a more student-centric curriculum. Since in our college, there is relative grading, so no clear percentage at times. Exams of some courses were so hard that the highest marks were only 40-50%, that too with a large standard deviation. Some courses were too easy that every student got an A, so it is basically a professor-centric curriculum.
Other: Seriously, after giving JEE Advance, whichever top college, top branch I am eligible for, I opt for it. As I come from a humble background, I don’t have exposure to what all to do and how to do so. I just go with the flow. Social life was truly amazing at IITK with its Asia’s one of the largest fest, Antaragni, to one of the finest alumni networks who are more enthusiastic to help you than you asking for help. Scholarships are also given to many students from various means such as alumni fund, alumni sponsored, and some college sponsored.

It's not a private college. It's IIT Kanpur. No doubt about anything.
Placements: In our batch, there are 64 students, out of which 40 got placed with an average package of approximately 40 Lacs. Others either pursued higher studies or work in other fields. There are many types of math courses, which are very different from any other branch. All IT companies recruit here.
Infrastructure: Labs and classrooms are too good. Good professors provide everything they have. Classes are held regularly. We have a good departmental building. Hostels are also excellent, with nice messes and rooms. Cleaning is done regularly. All other facilities are available.
Faculty: Teachers are the top in India, so no comment on their qualifications. Teaching is okay. Yes, it is a necessary course in today's world because math is involved in every aspect of work. Semester exams are very hectic. To pass, you need to study every day.

Review of IIT Kanpur by a civil engineering student .
Placements: I had about 147 students in my batch. The highest package will be around 40 lacs, the lowest package will be around 5 lacs, and the average will be around 15 lacs. Mainly, construction and steel companies will be recruiting. About 20–30% of students got internships. Internships will be attained by mostly PG students. Structures, environment, and hydraulics will be the top roles.
Infrastructure: There are 4 types of Wi-Fi available almost at every spot in college. The labs are wonderful and well-equipped. Classrooms are extraordinary and contain switch boards, projectors, big screens and central AC. The library contains a vast number of books, a good chair, fewer switch boards compared to occupancy, and central AC. Mess food will be average. You can get extra items by paying the very minimum amount. Canteen food will be good compared to a mess. We have a health centre open 24 hours a day, and money will be paid by the college for any treatment and free medicine every time. We have big grounds and can play almost all sports.
Faculty: Teachers are qualified and knowledgeable but some are not fit for teaching. The course curriculum is relevant. Extra work should be done by the students to get internships and placements. Semester exam difficulty level will be based on professor but grading is tough compared to other IITs. Pass percentages will be lower compared to other IITs .
Other: I have chosen IIT Kanpur but there is no civil engineering in it. We have a branch society, which helps us lot and my 4th semester courses were good. Bringing awareness about civil engineering to students. Various events will happen at clubs and societies. We have 3 fests. 2 in October and 1 in March. A batch consists of around 1200 students. We can build connections by participating in clubs, societies, and festivals. Campus is inside the city and you can roam outside but you will be pan-parag more. You have some scholarships like NSP, DONOR, and FBM based on your eligibility. Extracurricular activities are clubs, societies, and fests.
