NMIMS MPSTME Student Develops AI Model for Sign Language Translation, Empowering the Hearing and Speech-Impaired Community
June 26, 2023: An innovative artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by Preeyaj Safary, a gifted and caring 19-year-old BTech student at NMIMS Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering (MPSTME), Mumbai, converts sign language into text, revolutionising communication for people with hearing and speech impairments. With the help of Preeyaj's ground-breaking technology, the communication gap is closed and seamless connection with the rest of society is made possible. Preeyaj was motivated to create a solution to improve the lives of deaf and mute people easier after visiting a restaurant and seeing the difficulties they had in speaking with others. The AI model uses a camera to record sign language gestures, and by comparing them to a large collection of sign language images, it successfully converts the gestures into written text that is shown on a screen that is attached to the camera. In order to ensure good communication, the model not only offers the words that match to the signs but also displays the amount of translation correctness.
Preeyaj gathered a wide variety of sign language graphics from a number of places, including websites and conversations with people connected to NGOs operating in this field. As the AI model diligently adds more indicators to its database, it keeps growing, and as the technology is used more frequently, it will further improve the database's accuracy and comprehensiveness. Preeyaj remarked, "I was extremely impacted by the obstacles experienced by people with hearing and speech disabilities while engaging with the public. Observing how inclusive society is motivated me to investigate how technology may improve communication. I started working on this project during the lockdown because I thought technology could lead to improvement. Along with his outstanding accomplishments in sign language translation, Preeyaj also created a computer programme to help seniors schedule appointments for vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic. His continuous attempts to address pressing societal challenges with creative solutions demonstrate his dedication to using technology for the benefit of society. As Preeyaj's tale serves as an illustration of the transformative potential of technology and innovation, MPSTME is still dedicated to developing the skills of its students and giving them the resources and assistance they need to make the world a better place.
