NMIMS MPSTME Student Develops AI Model for Sign Language Translation, Empowering the Hearing and Speech-Impaired Community

June 26, 2023: An innovative artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by Preeyaj Safary, a gifted and caring 19-year-old BTech student at NMIMS Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering (MPSTME), Mumbai, converts sign language into text, revolutionising communication for people with hearing and speech impairments. With the help of Preeyaj's ground-breaking technology, the communication gap is closed and seamless connection with the rest of society is made possible. Preeyaj was motivated to create a solution to improve the lives of deaf and mute people easier after visiting a restaurant and seeing the difficulties they had in speaking with others. The AI model uses a camera to record sign language gestures, and by comparing them to a large collection of sign language images, it successfully converts the gestures into written text that is shown on a screen that is attached to the camera. In order to ensure good communication, the model not only offers the words that match to the signs but also displays the amount of translation correctness.

Preeyaj gathered a wide variety of sign language graphics from a number of places, including websites and conversations with people connected to NGOs operating in this field. As the AI model diligently adds more indicators to its database, it keeps growing, and as the technology is used more frequently, it will further improve the database's accuracy and comprehensiveness. Preeyaj remarked, "I was extremely impacted by the obstacles experienced by people with hearing and speech disabilities while engaging with the public. Observing how inclusive society is motivated me to investigate how technology may improve communication. I started working on this project during the lockdown because I thought technology could lead to improvement. Along with his outstanding accomplishments in sign language translation, Preeyaj also created a computer programme to help seniors schedule appointments for vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic. His continuous attempts to address pressing societal challenges with creative solutions demonstrate his dedication to using technology for the benefit of society. As Preeyaj's tale serves as an illustration of the transformative potential of technology and innovation, MPSTME is still dedicated to developing the skills of its students and giving them the resources and assistance they need to make the world a better place.

Innovative Ideas and Breakthroughs from NMIMS MPSTME Civil Engineering

April 19, 2023: In the areas of disaster management, flood resilience, and sustainable infrastructure, NMIMS MPSTME's department of civil engineering has made notable progress. The department has finished multiple student-led projects on subjects like renewable energy, groundwater modelling, and self-healing concrete in addition to publishing two patents, presenting research papers at international conferences, and more.

The first patent, titled "Automated Flood Water Regulating Multipurpose System," suggests a unique method for building multipurpose wells on the banks of rivers to discharge surplus water and produce hydropower as a means of enhancing flood resistance. The second patent, called "Aqua Barrier," describes an automated system that can shield any flood-prone location from water-related calamities, regardless of its size. The student-led projects are similarly stunning, covering subjects like oscillating tidal wave energy converters and low-volume rural concrete highways. These initiatives highlight the department's emphasis on eco-friendly building practises, clean energy sources, and cutting-edge architecture. The NMIMS MPSTME Civil Engineering Department faculty, under the direction of the department head, Dr Meenal Mategaonkar, and the research coordinator, Dr Jigisha Vashi, played a crucial role in assisting and mentoring students in achieving research excellence. The Winners of InternStellar Awards 2021

The InternStellar

Image attribute extraction is used to tackle a variety of business challenges, including miscategorised listings, SEO optimisation, improved search, fraud detection, and more. Users carefully evaluate and correct incorrect image matches. The winner of this award increased Ugam's JARVIS attribute extraction capacity by retraining deep learning models with manual modifications. To increase the model's accuracy and speed, they used transfer learning, a method of developing new models by fine-tuning previously trained models, on top of Inception V3, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model.

The InternStellar – Story Master

Customer feedback comes in the shape of reviews, social media posts, surveys, and other forms of communication. This data must be analysed in order to make informed business decisions. The winner of this award increased Ugam's JARVIS sentiment analysis workflow's accuracy and scalability. They were able to minimise the processing time and cost of assessing consumer sentiment by 50% by using PySpark, a distributed computing solution.

The InternStellar – Problem Solver

Product qualities are important in eCommerce since they assist customers in finding the proper product. By examining the power of knowledge graphs, the winner of the prize increased the search efficiency of Ugam's JARVIS attribution capabilities. Knowledge graphs increased the relevancy of search results by adding context to data.
