May 26, 2022: The setting sun cast its last rays on the city's NSHM Knowledge Campus, setting the place aglow — fittingly so — even as the educational institution hosted 'Art festival: Bringing passion and colour to the streets of India,' another event in the fourth edition of the Indo-French cultural festival "Bonjour India 2022."
The French Institute in India, Alliance Française du Bengale, NSHM Knowledge Campus, and Kolkata-based art company Culture Monks collaborated on an intercultural art festival recently, showcasing the works of French graffiti artist Skio.
The dramatisation of a mural by Skio, supported by some students from the NSHM Design School, was the focus of the afternoon (NDS). The piece was made to honour the street art movement, which advocates for equality and freedom of expression in modern society's public spaces.
Didier Talpain, the Consul General of France in Kolkata, unveiled the collaborative mural in the presence of Alliance Française du Bengale director Nicolas Facino, president Ranjan Mitter, and others. It was followed by a cultural programme organised by NSHM Knowledge Campus students.
A panel discussion with Skio, Hiran Mitra, a Kolkata-based artist, Arnab Samaddar, an illustrator, Swagata Guha, an interior designer, Sudipta Dawn, founder of Culture Monks, and Krishnendu Sarkar, head of NSHM Knowledge Campus, was also held as part of the event.
"In both India and France, there is a lot of excitement for street art and urban culture. In many parts of India, there is a long history of wall art. France has a thriving urban art culture as well. "Through the discovery of intricacy in minimalism, Skio's artworks aspire for a remarkable harmony between geometry, anatomy, and colour," Nicolas Facino noted.
As part of the event, a panel discussion was also held with Skio; Hiran Mitra, an artist based in Kolkata; Arnab Samaddar, an illustrator; Swagata Guha, an interior designer; Sudipta Dawn, founder of Culture Monks; and Krishnendu Sarkar, head of NSHM Knowledge Campus
