SRM School Of Public Health Disseminates Key Findings Of NFHS -5 For TN & Puducherry
December 22, 2021: At SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, the School of Public Health (SPH) at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, celebrates the successful completion and dissemination of the key findings of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS -5) for the state of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (SRM MCH&RC). The fifth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) includes statistics on population, health, and nutrition for India and each state/union territory (UT), as well as data at the district level.
Preschool education, handicap, access to a toilet facility, death registration, menstrual hygiene, and abortion are all new themes in NFHS-5. The range of clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical testing (CAB) has been enlarged to include measurements of waist and hip circumferences, as well as the age range for blood pressure and blood glucose testing. In Tamil Nadu, SRM SPH examined 27,929 families, 25,650 women, and 3,372 males; in Puducherry, 3,520 houses, 3,669 women, and 534 men were surveyed.
"This is an eye-opener concerning India's health state," remarked Dr P. Kuganantham, a member of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Expert Advisory Committee for COVID19. “Data aids decision-making. It emphasises the community's and nation's overall public health", he continued.
He explained and mentioned the tactics that were used in Survey 1 in 1993. He claims that public health is usually put on the back burner. In Tamil Nadu, it was Public Health that saved the day during a pandemic. "During the COVID, only about a third of those who were infected were admitted to hospitals, while the rest were treated through Tennessee's excellent public health system."
On this occasion, the important findings of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were released. Members of the SRM SPH team who completed the NFHS -5 Project were also recognised. Dean (Medical) Dr A. Sundaram, Dean (School of Public Health) Dr Padma Venkat, and other SPH members were in attendance.

SRM Honors Special Children On World Disability Day
December 9, 2021: At SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRM MCH&RC), Kattankulathur, SRM College of Occupational Therapy (SRM OT) honoured three exceptional youngsters (K. Vijay, A. Ravi Varma, and T. Hemavarshani) who have proven to be remarkable performers despite their physical limitations. "Your contribution will be wonderful and remarkable," S. Sankara Narayanan told the students. “Now is the time for a more inclusive society. We used to live in large families, and it was convenient to look after exceptional youngsters. We are now a single-parent family. NIEPMD was created since it has become the government's responsibility to care for this society. The government of Tamil Nadu is the finest in India when it comes to treating individuals with disabilities. Our administration is always willing to help with any problems", he continued
"Autism can be entirely healed with proper therapy," said Dean (Medical) Dr. A. Sundaram. “As a result, it's not a defect. This year, SRM MCH&RC opened a sensory garden to assist youngsters with special needs", he continued
SRM OT is one of India's oldest colleges in this field, and it has provided outstanding service to children born with disabilities such as autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other similar conditions, assisting them in mainstreaming into mainstream society and obtaining appropriate employment opportunities.
SRM & GoI Successfully Complete & Disseminate Key Findings Of NFHS 5 For TN & Puducherry
November 26, 2021: In 2018, the coveted National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS) projects for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were granted to the School of Public Health, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur (II Phase States). Surveys and health-related data are collected from homes in all districts through these Ministry of Health and Family Welfare programmes.
Dr V.K.Paul, Member Niti Ayog, and Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, revealed the important findings of the survey on November 24, 2021, following the successful completion of 14 states in the second phase.
The fifth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) includes statistics on population, health, and nutrition for India and each state/union territory (UT), as well as data at the district level. NFHS-5 measures are similar to NFHS-4 in terms of understanding patterns and allowing temporal comparisons.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, like in previous rounds, designated the International Institute for Population Sciences in Mumbai as the lead agency for the NFHS-5. Each NFHS's major goal is to produce reliable statistics on health and family welfare, as well as emerging challenges in this area, in order to guide policy at the national and local levels. Preschool education, handicap, access to a toilet facility, death registration, menstrual hygiene, and abortion are among the new issues covered in this cycle. The range of clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical testing (CAB) has been enlarged to include measurements of waist and hip circumferences, as well as the age range for blood pressure and blood glucose testing.
This fact sheet for Tamil Nadu contains information on key indicators and trends. The NFHS-5 fieldwork in phase 2 States/UTs was split into two sections due to the pandemic crisis and the enforcement of lockdown. The School of Public Health performed NFHS-5 fieldwork in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from 6 January to 21 March 2020, prior to the lockdown, and from 21 December 2020 to 31 March 2021, after the lockdown. Video-Assisted Anal Treatment For Fistula-In-Ano: Novel Treatment For The First Time In SRM Hospital
August 10, 2021: Recurrences of fistula–in–ano, or perianal fistula, are common, requiring multiple hospital stays and discharge from the perianal region for individuals suffering from excruciating agony. The most common therapy is an open fistulectomy or fistulotomy operation, in which the wound is left open in the perianal region and heals slowly, delaying the patient's return to normal life. Furthermore, these procedures have the potential to harm faecal continence.
With these considerations in mind, the surgeons at the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre in Kattankulathur attempted to treat patients with a Video Assisted Anal Fistula Treatment (VAAFT). This innovative approach, which was first introduced in 2006, is gaining traction all around the world.
The first patient was a 25-year-old man who presented to the OPD with perianal discharge concerns. The diagnosis of Fistula-in-Ano was established after appropriate testing. He was treated satisfactorily with VAAFT and was discharged the next day because he had minimal post-operative pain, no open wound, and no major complaints. His incision had healed well, but he had continence concerns when he was seen a week later. He was quickly able to resume his normal routine.
“We have done five cases of VAAFT so far with a good degree of patient satisfaction,” said Lt Col Dr A. Ravikumar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Medical and Health Sciences.
“Using a fistuloscope, we were able to visualise the entire fistulous tract, which was subsequently coagulated with electrocautery, scraped, and washed with glycine. The wound is repaired with absorbable sutures after the exterior orifice is removed. Patients will experience minimal post-operative pain as a result of this.”
Due to the positive findings of the VAAFT, surgeons at SRM Hospital are experimenting with caudal anaesthesia and post-operative analgesic blocks, which could allow patients to be discharged the same day of surgery (day case surgery), making the procedure even more comfortable for them.
