Two students of Jadavpur University have developed a device to analyse if a coughing person is a coronavirus positive or not.

A group of students at Jadavpur University has developed a device to detect if a coughing person is a coronavirus carrier or not.

The device has been made by two undergraduate students of the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering in Jadavpur University and will track a coughing person and analyze if the same person is a possible suspect of the COVID-19 or not.

This device can help in containing the further spread of coronavirus as it can be used as a first-level screening system to identify the COVID-19 carrier with available data.

The non-contact device has been developed in such a way that it can identify multiple coughing persons at the same time. It has embedded image and sound sensors, which will work even if the person is away from the device.

The device can be used in quarantine centres, office-spaces, classrooms, or built-up areas with gatherings for monitoring the people present there.

"This device can also be used in drones for identifying COVID-19 suspects in public places in the open," one of the faculty members at the varsity said.

Two students - Annesya Banerjee and Achal Nilhani -both third-year undergraduate students have developed the device, under the guidance of Professor P Venkateswaran.

The device has got a very positive response from ICMR Kolkata and several doctors treating coronavirus positive patients and will soon go for real-time clinical testing with COVID-19 patients, the professor added.

Jadavpur University is an open university. It offers two special courses, which are- Distance Education Programme and the Global Change Programme. The Distance Education Programme is for the students who cannot attend the regular classes at the institute but are willing to finish their education. This programme has been recognised by Indira Gandhi National Open University.
