India’s professional colleges, including engineering and B-Schools, are expecting a tough year. The campus placement process at many colleges is likely to get troubled due to covid-19 pandemic hitting businesses and global economies indicating a recession. On Wednesday, the human resource development ministry directed 24 IITs to arrange for special recruitment drive for students who may have lost or may lose jobs on account of the outbreak. However, teaching-learning disruptions are being taken care of by shifting classes online. Institutions asserted that covid-19 would directly affect the summer placement process and eventually the final recruitment season at such schools including Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

According to the HRD ministry, where jobs have been withdrawn after campus placement of students, a special recruitment drive would be conducted in July and August for them. Sarit K. Das, director of IIT Ropar, stated that the pandemic was affecting educational institutions adversely.  2020 is going to be a tough year from the campus recruitment point of view. Summer placement will get a hit first, and it may not start in time. And it has its tumbling effect on final recruitment. Das stated that nearly 40 per cent of their students go for international summer training and this is doubtful to happen as the coronavirus has impacted the whole world.

According to Bharat Bhaskar, IIM Raipur Director, if the summer placement gets hit, the pre-placement offers will get impacted. Pre-placement offers were made to students based on their performance in summer training. Bhaskar said since the pandemic has hit all sectors, institutions will have to reassess the situation once the lockdown is over, whenever the situation improves.
