Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras incubation cell startup in waste management for smart cities has developed an IoT- enabled smart bin system to prevent the spread of coronavirus from the waste that is generated at CVPs (Contagion Vulnerable points - primarily Hospitals, Clinics, Public Bins, Quarantine Zones).

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras incubation cell startup in waste management for smart cities, Antariksh Waste Ventures has developed an IoT- enabled smart bin system to prevent the spread of coronavirus from the waste that is generated at CVPs (Contagion Vulnerable points - primarily Hospitals, Clinics, Public Bins, Quarantine Zones).

The smart bin system has been named as AirBin. It helps in remote monitoring of waste accumulation levels and clearance by using IoT systems. This smart bin system can be added on to existing garbage bins on nearby poles, walls, or the bin lids.

The main aim behind this innovation is to help rural and urban local bodies to clear every bin before it is overloaded and accelerate sustainability. This will come in the market in around five months. The research team is planning to supply the first 200 AirBin devices across the country in the next few months and plans to deliver 1,00,000 units for Smar Cities in India.

“Waste management processes will play a key role in containing contagion in public or private spaces. From the waste collection, transport, segregation, disposal to recycling, every process needs to be overhauled quickly and technology will play a vital role in this transformation. Timely cleaning of bins will be a key priority while faced with a shortage of labor,” Mahek Mahendra Shah, Founder, Antariksh Waste Ventures Pvt. Ltd., IIT Madras, said.

“Remote waste levels monitoring, smarter pickups, skill development with good protection gear for Sanitation teams, educating citizens on best sanitation practices, will be some of the key elements driving this industry forward, in the coming months," he added.

Various IITs around the country are coming up with the best of innovations to help India in its fight against COVID-19.
