IIITM-K is now Kerala's first Digital University

Before this, IIITM-K was working as an autonomous educational institution established by the Government of Kerala in the year 2000.

Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management - Kerala (IIITM-K) has been modified as the state's first Digital University by the Kerala Government on Wednesday. An ordinance was passed in the Kerala cabinet which has upgraded the university. The university will consist of five varied schools in fundamental areas in digital world. Special attention will be given to research.

IIITM-K has been an independent educational institute since its foundation in the year 2000 by the Government of Kerala. It has been a multidisciplinary leading postgraduate institute providing programmes in Computer Science and Information Technology (IT). Before this, the cabinet proposed to the Kerala Governor to pass an ordinance for the upgradation of IIITMK into a digital university with the name The Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology

This new step is one among the efforts of the Kerala government to develop and strengthen the IT industry and digital technology to accelerate development. This will help to speed up the association between the education and IT industry sectors. IIITMK has been advanced to a digital university so as to emphasise on disruptive technologies comprising blockchain, Internet of things, AI and data analytics. To this end, five different schools will be established under the new digital university.

The schools will work on domains such as informatics, digital bio-sciences computing, electronic design and automation, and digital humanities.
