IIT Delhi establishes 'School of AI' to offer PhD programme

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has announced that it has set up the 'School of Artificial Intelligence' that will offer PhD programme and the admission cycle will begin from January 2021. The institute is also planning to offer PG level degree courses in this school soon. 

As per CSRankings.org, IIT Delhi is No.1 in India based on the number of high-quality publications in the area of AI in the last ten years. Speaking at the event, IIT Delhi Director Professor V. Ramgopal Rao, Director said, “The future progress of a nation will depend on its AI capability. Therefore, many countries have started investing heavily in AI. India is also responding to this. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised the importance of AI in his policies. Besides, India is ranked 5th in the world in both the most number of AI companies and AI jobs.”

School of Artificial Intelligence, ScAI will have a flexible faculty model that includes core faculty, joint faculty, and adjunct faculty members who also can be from the industry. This school will have 50 IIT Delhi faculty members with expertise around AI. The aim of the program is to cement IIT Delhi’s leadership position in India and considerably improve its global standing.

IIT Delhi’s School of Artificial Intelligence will initially work on the postgraduate level and once it achieves a critical mass of core AI researchers, professional-level educational programs will be started. In order to provide a platform for industry, government, and civil society entities to share their domain problems, which will then be matched with IIT Delhi faculty with the relevant technical/ analytical expertise.
