IIT Delhi Hosts UN Tech Envoy Amandeep Singh Gill for Discussion on Emerging AI Policies
IIT Delhi hosted Amandeep Singh Gill, UN Under-Secretary-General for Digital and Emerging Technologies, for a talk on ‘UN@80: New Direction for Technology Governance.'
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi welcomed Amandeep Singh Gill, UN Under-Secretary-General for Digital and Emerging Technologies and the Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology. During his visit, he delivered an insightful talk titled ‘UN@80: New Direction for Technology Governance,’ shedding light on the critical role of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) governance in shaping the global future. His address highlighted the evolving challenges and opportunities in technology governance and emphasized the need for collaborative international efforts to ensure equitable and ethical advancements in AI and emerging technologies.
The event underscored the need for inclusive frameworks that engage all stakeholders and foster international collaboration, ensuring that technology and AI serve the greater good of society. He was engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on AI governance and emerging trends with IIT Delhi Director, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, alongside distinguished Deans and faculty members.
Following these deliberations, he toured the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at IIT Delhi, where he interacted with startups incubated at the institute. He met with teams from Cyran AI, Mobisec, Tensor Dynamics, and Synergy Quantum, gaining insights into their innovative solutions and contributions to cutting-edge technological advancements.
Changing AI Governance
During his address to a diverse audience of students and faculty from IIT Delhi and beyond, Amandeep Singh Gill delved into the evolving landscape of AI governance and the key outcomes of the Global Digital Compact (GDC), adopted by UN member states in September 2024. He highlighted the critical role of young people in shaping the GDC’s vision and underscored the importance of involving students and young innovators in driving equitable and inclusive technological development. He stressed that their contributions are essential for ensuring that advancements in technology serve the greater good of society.
The visit highlighted the shared commitment of IIT Delhi and the United Nations to fostering fair and ethical AI governance while empowering young innovators and future leaders to drive meaningful change. The session featured a dynamic fireside chat, hosted by Prof. Vaishnavi Sundarajan from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi. This engaging discussion offered valuable insights and addressed the audience's questions on AI governance and its far-reaching global implications.
