Jawahar Lal Nehru University Vice-chancellor M Jagdesh Kumar has said that the UGC guidelines has taken into account diverse conditions and requirements of higher educational institutions, and it will help students to get some clarity about the overall academic schedule.

Jawahar Lal Nehru University Vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar called the UGC guidelines on examinations and rescheduling the academic calendar for universities a comprehensive and fresh breather for students.

On Wednesday, the University Grants Commission(UGC) has released the guidelines for rescheduling the academic calendar and examination schedule. As per the guidelines, the new academic session for freshers may begin from September, and for those who are already enrolled, it will begin from August in wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The commission said that the exams for final semester students will be conducted in July.

The UGC guidelines on examinations and academic calendars for the universities are very comprehensive, Kumar, VC, JNU said.

“They take into account the diverse conditions and requirements of higher educational institutions,” he said.

The guidelines emphasized the need to follow the measures announced by the government to contain further spread of coronavirus while ensuring that the academic process continues with the use of available technology, he said.

The UGC guideline makes sense, as even after the lockdown is lifted, it will take some time for things to get normal. The students will also require time to complete their examinations to move to the next academic session. The guidelines also suggested a flexible approach for completion of examination without hampering academic and keeping the interests of the students in mind, Kumar said.

The step to extend the submission of thesis/dissertations by research schools by six months is particularly welcome, he added.

“Universities are also permitted to alter, add, modify or amend these guidelines to suit the local situations and preparedness of the Universities. These guidelines come as a fresh breather to the students and also the educational institutes in these challenging COVID-19 pandemic period,” he added.
