Karnataka implements NEP in engineering colleges
Karnataka Chief Minister Basvaraj Bommai says the NEP implementation in state engineering colleges will bring major changes in technical education.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basvaraj Bommai launched the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) in engineering colleges which the former said would bring major changes in technical education in the state. He said this at the launch of engineering textbooks as per NEP standard, engineering education in Kannada language, four year BSc pharma courses in engineering colleges.
“The new NEP-2020 policy to incorporate it in engineering education, curriculum on par to make Karnataka a destination for technical education, four-year BSc honours and engineering education in Kannada medium. Such a big reform has never happened in Karnataka’s technical education,” Bommai said.
As per a report published in The New Indian Express, Bommai said the programmes were possible to implement because the state and the centre were run by the same government (political party).
He said rural children should be given quality education to take them to the international level. Towards this, he said significant change was possible after holding necessary research in the regard. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had implemented the policy despite all obstacles, he said.
For the national education policy to be fully successful, Bommai said change was needed from lower to higher levels — from the minds of the teachers to students. In a technology driven society he suggested technical colleges to be in the forefront of change in the lives of people.
Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has already identified 66 colleges based on infrastructure and availability of faculties to offer BSc courses.
VTU Vice Chancellor Prof Karisiddappa had said, “It is a four-year BSc (Honours) programme that comes with an exit option as per the National Education Policy (NEP) guidelines. The university has decided to start the courses following a suggestion by the Higher Education Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan.” VTU, the only technological university in Karnataka, has decided to offer general science degree courses from the current academic year.
