KCET 2022 Repeaters Issue: On August 22, 2022, the Karnataka High Court took up the hearing on the petition pertaining to the KCET 2022 repeaters issue. But no decision has been taken in the court and the honourable judge has heard arguments from both parties. The judgement has been reserved. The final decision is expected to be pronounced by September 1, 2022.
Students moved the court after the Karnataka Examination Authority published a rank list on July 30, 2022. They questioned the non-consideration of PUC-2021 marks while allotting ranks in CET-2022.
When the KCET 2022 result was out, students were shocked as KEA did not consider their PUC II marks. Almost 24,000 students who appeared for PUC II exams last year attended KCET 2022. However, this year, candidates who appeared for PUC II exams and KCET 2022 had a 50:50 weightage for PUC marks and KCET marks. Further, on August 8, 2022, the High Court kept on hold the document verification and counselling process of KCET until further orders.

About the Karnataka High Court Hearing on August 18, 2022. What did the High Court propose?
Check below for some highlights of the court hearing:
- The Karnataka High Court asked the state government whether it is possible to award ranks by considering the marks of PUC II-2021 and CET 2022 at a 25:75 ratio. This is for the students who have appeared as repeaters for the Common Entrance Test (CET) -2022.
- In the High Court on August 18, 2022, no judgement has been passed and the matter has been adjourned to August 22, 2022.
- Therefore, the next hearing will take place on August 22, 2022.
- KEA should not start the counselling process for KCET 2022 till further HC orders.
In his remarks while adjourning the matter to August 22, Justice Krishna Kumar proposed that "In all fairness to the freshers and repeaters of CET, is it possible for the government to work out a proposition where 75 per cent of the CET score and 25 per cent of the PU score be considered for evaluating the rankings for the Covid-19 batch (repeaters) of KCET?"
The court was adjourned for further hearing till Monday (August 22, 2022) to enable the government to inform the court whether the proposed solution can be worked out as a one-time measure to overcome this tough scenario during this year.

The government's stand
The government, in its written statement, has opposed the plea of the petitioners to award them ranks in the CET 2022. It was done in the case of students who have written the II PU examination in 2022. The KEA had considered the marks of II PUC-2022 and CET-2022 in a 50:50 ratio as per the law for the students who had appeared for the PU II 2022 examination.
Both KEA and the government have agreed that ranks have to be determined based on the marks obtained in the qualifying examinations and written examinations, both in the II PU course and the CET.
As per the government, the written examination for the II PU course was not conducted in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but in August, written examinations were held for CET-2021. The marks were awarded to the students based on a special formula in II PU course 2021. The formula consists of students' marks from SSLC exams, the I PU course and internal marks assigned by the colleges in the II PU course.
The government also stated that students who completed the II PU course in 2021 without being required to take the written examination cannot claim credit for the marks awarded using a special formula.
Some of the repeater students alleged that KEA did not inform students via press note of the non-inclusion of PUC 2 marks. Students came to know about it only after the announcement of the KCET 2022 ranks. The repeater students called it unfair and so they are demanding justice on their part with students who passed PUC in 2022.
