Kerala University’s sole self-financing engineering college in trouble

The University College of Engineering, Karyavottom, the self-financing engineering college under the University of Kerala, has been facing a lot of trouble for not being able to implement sixth pay commission scale for its employees. The University was also denied sanction for its nine NRI seats by the All India Council for Technical Education.

Following the sanction denial for the nine NRI seats in the 2018-19 academic year, the situation in the college has only worsened. The college was denied the sanction owing to its inability to implement the sixth pay commission scale for the UCE employees. The college had reported a loss of Rs 46 lakh by way of running expenses in that academic year.

The university has not been able to correctly rectify the deficiency that has, in turn, prompted the AICTE to halve the college’s student intake in that academic year. While the college has a sanctioned strength of 198 seats, the college was permitted to fill only 99 seats, of which 92 were filled in its three streams of Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Information Technology. The council had also threatened further action in April if the University failed to address the issue within six months.

As per official sources, the sixth pay commission implementation would cost the university an additional Rs 12 lakh per month. The crisis will further worsen with the seventh pay commission report. The employees have been demanding a salary hike.
