JEE Chemistry syllabus is divided into 3 broad units:

  • Physical Chemistry: This covers concepts about the fundamental unit of everything -  atom. Many other important topics like Chemical Kinetics, Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry are also a part of Physical Chemistry.
  • Organic Chemistry: This is all about Carbon and its compounds. There are lots of interest mysteries of Carbon and organic chemistry uncovers them.
  • Inorganic Chemistry: Inorganic chemistry is about the way elements other than Carbon react and the results of these reactions.

Chemistry questions asked in JEE Mains require a balance of analytical and memorization skills. For instance, Physical chemistry questions are generally purely analytical, inorganic chemistry questions are more towards memorization side while organic chemistry questions often form a balance between the two.

There are about 25 - 30 chapters in the JEE Main Chemistry syllabus. Each of these chapters is important from the JEE point of view. Some are tough, some are easy. Some are asked often, some aren’t. Students who are aiming for top rank in JEE Mains should aim for those chapters that are most scoring. The list below talks about some of the most scoring topics in JEE Mains chemistry:

Q:   How do the exam patterns and formats of JEE Main and JEE Advanced compare?

A:
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are both national-level entrance exams conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering programs in India. While JEE Main is the first stage of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and is conducted by the National Testing Agency NTA JEE Advanced is the second stage of the exam and is conducted by one of the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on a rotational basis. Here are the key differences between the exam patterns and formats of JEE Main and JEE Advanced: 1. Number of Papers: JEE Main has two papers - Paper 1 for admission to B.E. /B.Tech courses and Paper 2 for admission to B.Arch/B.Planning courses. On the other hand, JEE Advanced has two papers - Paper 1 and Paper 2, both of which are mandatory. 2. Exam Mode: JEE Main is conducted in both online (Computer Based Test) and offline (Pen and Paper Based Test) modes, while JEE Advanced is conducted only in online mode. 3. Question Types: Both exams have multiple-choice questions (MCQs), but JEE Advanced also includes numerical answer type questions (NATs), where students have to enter the answer in numerical form. 4. Difficulty Level: JEE Main is generally considered easier than JEE Advanced in terms of difficulty level. 5. Syllabus: The syllabus for both exams is similar, but JEE Advanced includes a few additional topics and also requires a deeper understanding of the concepts. 6. Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for JEE Advanced students must first qualify for JEE Main and be among the top 2,50,000 candidates. 7. Number of Attempts: Students can attempt JEE Main for a maximum of three consecutive years, while JEE Advanced can be attempted for a maximum of two consecutive years.

Q:   Is there negative marking in JEE Main?

A:

The answer to this question is a Yes. As per the exam pattern of JEE Main 2024, 4 marks would be awarded for every question answered correctly, while negative marking will be done for every incorrect answer. This implies that 1 mark is deducted every time a candidate answers the question wrongly.  Zero or no marks will be given to un-attempted questions.

Q:   What is the exam pattern of JEE Mains?

A:

JEE Main 2025 exam pattern has been changed. As per the new pattern, there will be no optional question in section B of JEE Main 2025. The JEE Main Paper 1 (BE/B.Tech) will consist of 75 questions, 25 each from Physics Chemistry and Mathematics. Out of 25 questions, 20 will be MCQs and 5 will be NAV. Students need to answer all 5 NAV questions. JEE Main paper 2A for B.Arch consists of 77 questions of which 25 are from Mathematics, 50 from General Aptitude and 2 from Drawing. In Paper 2B for BPlan total questions are 100 of which 25 are from Mathematics, 50 from General Aptitude and 25 from Planning.

The question paper will consists of multiple choice questions (MCQs) and numerical value answer (NAV) type questions and total duration of exam is 3 hours.

    • Gaseous State: This chapter revolves around the famous gas equation (PV = nRT) and its variations. As a result, it is quite easy to solve the problems of this chapter. All that is required is the ability to quickly read the problem and visualize the scenario. The New Pattern Textbook of Physical Chemistry for Competitions (JEE Main & Advanced) by OP Tandon is known to be the best book to study this chapter.
    • Chemical Kinetics: This chapter is not only one of the easiest chapters, but also it is quite important because 2 other chapters are highly dependent on it - chemical equilibrium and electrochemistry. The whole chapter is about the rate law of a chemical reaction. Mastering this one law is sure to fetch you high marks in this chapter. Again, New Pattern Textbook of Physical Chemistry for Competitions (JEE Main & JEE Advanced) by OP Tandon will be a good book if you want to master this chapter.
    • General Organic Chemistry: This chapter is quite scoring because it is easy and lots of questions are asked in JEE from it. It is important because it forms the basis of entire organic chemistry. As a result, students should not miss it out. Organic Chemistry by LG Wade is arguably the best book for General Organic Chemistry. It covers all the fundamentals.
    • Reactions of Benzene: This is another highly important and scoring chapter, particularly for JEE Advanced. Questions asked are fairly standard and those who have practiced enough problems will be able to do well in JEE. There are certain reactions of benzene that don’t follow the regular pattern and are rather classified as exceptions. Students should watch out for these reactions because they are often asked in various competitive examinations. As usual, Organic Chemistry by LG Wade is the book to go if you want to nail this chapter.
  • Ores and Metallurgy: This chapter is not only conceptual but also quite asked in JEE. As a result, for those who are aiming for a high rank in JEE, it becomes an extremely important chapter. Students are advised to carefully learn and understand every concept of this chapter from NCERT textbooks because often, JEE paper setters directly pick up questions from NCERT. Those who want to study the advanced concepts of this chapter should study Concise Inorganic Chemistry by JD Lee.
  • Qualitative Analysis: This chapter is quite infamous among JEE aspirants because it is arguably one of those chapters which require a lot of memorization. However, this chapter may help students score well because the questions asked in JEE from this chapter are quite straightforward and easy to crack. Concise Inorganic Chemistry by JD Lee is quite good for this chapter.

The whole idea of maximizing the score in Chemistry is to ensure a balance between analytical skills and memorization skills. Students should try to spend maximum time in the chapters that will help them score well. This will not only help in optimal utilization of time but also help in getting an edge over the competitors.

One very important aspect to score high in Chemistry is to do periodic revision. As humans, we are bound to forget things if we don’t see them often. It is very easy for students to forget chemical formulae, chemical reactions and chemical structures of various chemical elements. It is highly recommended that students should manage a notebook with them where they keep a note of the things that they tend to forget. This notebook should then be used for periodic revision. This will make sure that you score high in JEE chemistry.

Q:   Why does JEE Advanced pattern changes every year?

A:

The JEE Advanced exam is known to be one of the toughest exams in India, with around 200,000 students competing for seats in the country's top institutions. The exam pattern changes dynamically every year, and the examiners want to test not only the students' credibility but also their adaptability. Moreover, they don't want to compromise the exam's core purpose of evaluating students' knowledge by repeating the same pattern every year. Therefore, it is beneficial to make some generalizations about the paper. This strategy ensures equal opportunity for all students and minimizes the popular "luck factor, " which we all have experienced during board exams. Analyzing previous year's papers to identify the weightage pattern for different chapters and deducing the essential topics is a useful approach. Changing the exam pattern also surprises the coaching industry that charges exorbitant fees without any guarantee of success. Lastly, since it is the JEE Advanced, surprise is an essential element, as no examiner wants rote learners to enter IIT and enjoy at taxpayers' expense.

Q:   Does the JEE Advanced Exam Pattern Depend on the Conducting IIT?

A:

This is one of the most popular questions and also a misconception about the JEE Advanced exam. The question paper design and pattern do not depend on the conducting IIT. It is never a fact that the question paper designed by an IIT will have the same difficulty level or same pattern each time it conducts JEE Advanced.

Q:   What are the important chapters in JEE Mains and JEE Advance that give up to 80% of marks?

A:
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are two of the most competitive engineering entrance exams in India. The syllabus for both exams is vast, but there are certain chapters that carry more weightage than others.
