The NSUI has said that first and second-year students should be promoted without exams, while third-year students should be promoted based on their past performance.

The Congress-backed National Students Union of India (NSUI) has demanded that first and second-year students should be promoted without holding the examination. Earlier, the University of Delhi had said that it is planning to conduct the examination through online mode.

NSUI said that those students who are studying in the final year should be promoted based on past academic performance plus 10 percent extra marks, as most of the students improve in academics in the final year.

It also requested that extra classes for the pending course work should only be conducted after the universities open.

"The NSUI has already stated that online exams are likely to be discriminatory given the highly uneven access to infrastructure and connectivity. It is also inadvisable to conduct exams without completion of course work in a physical class,” said Lokesh Chugh, National Incharge of Media & Communication, NSUI.

This move comes after, the Delhi University (DU), had said that it has given a number of suggestions to the University Grants Commission for conducting the online examination for the students, to ensure academia doesn't get affected due to the lockdown. The DU had also released the online examination form for the coming semester examination. Students who are supposed to appear for the May-June semester examinations of Delhi University have been asked to fill the online examination form.

However, the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) had suggested rescheduling the papers until coronavirus lockdown is uplifted.

The teachers cited concerns of accessibility over the possibility of the examinations being held online. They also said that online classes can’t be treated as a substitute for regular classes and students shouldn’t be evaluated on the basis of online classes.

On March 19, Delhi University was shut in wake of coronavirus outbreak. Delhi so far has seen 2,625 cases of the coronavirus and 54 deaths.
