Tamil Nadu releases new norms for engineering admissions
According to an order issued by the Higher Education Department, candidates scoring higher in mathematics will be given preference, followed by physics.
The Higher Education Department of Tamil Nadu has released new norms for engineering admissions to avoid any confusion while preparing the merit list.
Every year, merit lists are drawn up based on the scores of candidates in their Class 12 exams, but this year, Class 12 exams were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to an order issued by the Higher Education Department, if more than one candidate have scored same marks in the common merit list, the inter-se-merit among such candidates shall be determined.
Candidate obtaining higher marks in mathematics would be given better rank. If the two candidates have same marks in mathematics, then the one with higher marks in physics would be given better rank and the percentage of total marks in the qualifying examination will be taken, in the given order, to arrive at an inter-se-merit list. If two students have same scores even after this calculation, their Class 10 marks will be taken into consideration. If that also does not work out, then the age-wise senior candidate will be given preference in the merit list.
In the worst-case scenario, if the candidates were also born on the same day, the random numbers assigned to the applicants will be used to determine seniority in the merit list, the department said in a notification.
