Responding to the petition by Common Law Admission Test (CLAT 2021) candidates against the mandatory Rs 50,000 fee for counselling, Kerala High Court has issued notice to the candidates for being considered for seat allotment in National Law Universities (NLU).

The students' plea said this amount was not mentioned anywhere earlier, not on notifications on the website or in the NLU prospectus. The students have requested the court to direct the respondents for withdrawing this mandatory fee.

The petitioners' advocate Thareeq Anwar K argued that this is a violation of the fundamental rights to equality and is unreasonable and arbitrary in nature. He also said that since the students are not admitted to the university, they can also not avail any loans and one day time given to submit the fees once the students receive the counselling invitation is again too short a period for students to arrange this amount.

The high court has issued the notice to the respondents and the next hearing of the case is on July 30.

CLAT is the national level entrance exam for admission in UG and PG law programmes. CLAT 2021 was conducted at 84 centres on July 23 and the result was declared on July 29.
