IIM-Calcutta has designed this is a new programme different from the earlier completely residential and full-time programmes such as the postgraduate certificate in healthcare management, which is no longer being offered by the institute. 

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta introduces an executive programme in healthcare management (EPHM). Candidates must note that the programme has been launched for working professionals, including doctors, healthcare professionals, pharmacists, medical engineering professionals and entrepreneurs. The institute has decided to conduct classes for the one-year-long executive education certificate programme mainly via virtual mode. However, some sessions will be delivered on campus and in person. IIM-Calcutta has designed this is a new programme different from the earlier completely residential and full-time programmes such as the postgraduate certificate in healthcare management, which is no longer being offered by the institute. 

Rajesh Bhattacharya, programme director of EPHM and associate professor of public policy and management group at IIM Calcutta said,“Through this programme, we aim to improve the capabilities of professionals so that we can drive better outcomes in their respective fields. On a macro level, we are trying to improve the overall health and wellbeing in the country and improve their satisfaction with the health services availed by them and their families. We’re also trying to derive better economic impact by helping health professionals understand the management of financial resources.”

Candidates interested in IIM Calcutta Admissions 2021 must note that all applicants need to have at least 50% in their graduation or postgraduation. Medical practitioners and administrators with MBBS/BDS/BAMS degrees or equivalent degrees recognised by UGC/AICTE/MCI and students with biotechnology and biomedical background (bachelor’s degree or above) are also eligible to apply. A minimum of three years’ experience in the healthcare sector as on the date of application closure. Applicants from other disciplinary backgrounds shall also be eligible, provided they have a minimum of five years’ experience in the healthcare sector as on the application closure date.

The programme aims to provide an outlook of the healthcare sector across the world, the regulatory framework around them and the latest policies and their implementation. This also comprises practices such as disaster and epidemic management, which is extremely relevant for professionals in the current environment. The programme will also focus on emerging technologies in healthcare and their operational aspects it.

Functional modules of the programme offered by IIM Calcutta focuses on the strategic management side of healthcare and comprises a deep dive into disciples such as marketing, people management, operations and financial management. The course will involve IIM Calcutta faculty members who work in this space. The institute will also invite industry experts to lead certain sessions to give participants insights into current industry conversations.

“The pandemic has magnified the existing gaps in our country's healthcare infrastructure. For the medical community to deliver impactful healthcare, they can benefit from understanding the broader healthcare context and comparative health systems,” said Bhattacharya.

Talking about the career opportunities, Bhattacharya said, “It helps people transition into management and leadership roles in the healthcare sector. The programme will give students an added skill set. It can also help doctors looking to move into a leadership role within a hospital setting. Even if a physician wants to continue or expand his/her own practice after the course, the leadership and managerial skills they learn can certainly add value to their work.”
