Mystory@Latifa Dhun: How I chose my course and career
I have interesting stories to share about my both Undergraduate and Postgraduate years.
Starting with UG, I was determined to take up Science in Class 12 as I wanted to pursue Forensic Science later. But, one fateful morning, my encounter with Psychology made me change my plan. That exhibition was the turning point in my life. I attended a Psychology exhibition at the college I was eventually going study, and that exhibition changed my perception of Psychology as a subject. Stereotyped as a twisted subject, only those who understand the subject are the ones who can study it. After my introduction to Psychology at the exhibition, there was no looking back. However, choosing a college was a difficult task. Living in a city like Nagpur, I had a very few options. Since, leaving the city was not possible at that time, Hislop College seemed the best option for BA in Psychology. Getting admission in the college is not tough and anyone can easily take admission, especially in Arts courses.
Had I had the option to go live in a different city and study there, I admit I would have had much better education. But, standing out in the crowd is what I have learnt the hard way. I am proud to say I am one of the mentors of one of the most sought after youth driven online course MyCaptain in India.
My Postgraduate it is a different story altogether. I never thought I would pursue MBA (because of Accounts and Finance). After struggling to get through any college for MA in Psychology in a different city, I ended up taking up a teaching job in a public school. When a couple of friends got to know about it, they said advised me to take up some professional course than work (which was a wise suggestion). After a lot of research as to which professional course to pursue, I joined Tirpude Institute of Management Education, Nagpur, with a very low CAT score. HR and Marketing involving some nuances of Psychology attracted me. So, there I was, set on my second journey of doing something good. Had I worked a little harder, I would have been in a different city writing a different story. But, here I am, sitting in a chic office working as a Business Analyst, enjoying myself.
Life lessons learnt in college
People change, interests change. There is no fun in life without a little bit of spice!
To be honest, though I was not in a top college or university, I had the best time of my life in my college. The faculty members were amazing with whom you could discuss almost anything under the sun. It had a huge library filled with all kinds of books. I made some super amazing friends there who are in my heart forever.
My UG day taught me life lessons like, every day is not your day but, there are a lot of days to look forward to and be happy, to pursue my passion and never give up. My UG experience made me bold and expressive. And, taught me how to manage and organize events. I consider it as one of the best decisions I had ever made. I am very sure, I would have not had such amazing people around me, if I would have been anywhere else.
My PG was more or less the same. Being a professional course, it taught me professionalism. It taught me how to look at the world from a business point of view, etc. Whatever, I am today, I completely owe it to my faculty who understood me and were there for me to help me in any difficulty that I faced. They guided me throughout on all my decisions and suggested me what would be the best for me. If I would have been at some other place, maybe I would have got better quality education and more career opportunities. However, at a place I am right now, I have the best that I could get and I am proud of that.
