Mystory@Sugreevu Hemanth: How I chose my course and college
After High School, many of my friends planned to join either Sri Chaitanya College or Narayana College. Even I had the same thought, and I joined in Sri Chaitanya College. It was time for me to leave my home where I had been living from the past 16 years. All my family members came to drop me at the college and I somehow stopped myself from crying. I know even my mother was trying the same. Finally, they left me in the college and went back. The real story begins now. I felt like I was left in jail and could not stop crying. I did not even speak to my room mates or friends the whole night.
The next morning, I called up my father and asked him to take me away from the hostel. They took it normally till afternoon until they received another call came saying that I had not eaten anything since yesterday evening. Finally, by evening they came to see me and I cried a lot which melted my father’s heart. He forgot about all the fee he had paid here and took back me home. Before leaving from the hostel, the principal told me, “You are making the wrong decision in life and this would change the fate of your life”. At that time, those were big words for me to understand. I came back to my hometown and joined a local college with PCM stream. I scored 83% in class 12 which was average as compared to my friends.
To secure a seat in the college for graduation, I had to appear for the entrance exam, CET. I missed making in to the list of selected candidates by just 1 mark. The worse part of all this was that I chose the wrong answer even after knowing the right one. Nevertheless, I needed to continue my studies so my father made me join Engineering in Management quota. It was then that I realised the value of even 1 mark.
How I cracked college admission
I performed well in Engineering, and was a topper in the college. In my third year I started working on projects and presented them in cultural fest of colleges. During that period of time I realised I am not passionate about my Electronics Engineering and was doing everything just for the sake to complete my graduation. Then I started thinking of my future. I started questioning my interests, and finally I thought of starting business as I possessed good leadership and communication skills.
I chose to do MBA and started working towards it from the end of my 3rd year. I realised that it was necessary to get CAT guidance from a good coaching institute. But there was no coaching institute in my hometown that could help me crack CAT exam. So I had two options, either to wait for the completion of my graduation and then join a coaching institute or to start there and then and travel to the coaching center which was 40km away from my city. My passion to make it to a good MBA college made me choose the second option.
My daily routine was to wake up at 8 in the morning and attend college from 9 am to 4.50 pm. I took the permission from my HOD I started leaving college by 4.30 which was against rules. I boarded the bus by 5pm and reached the coaching institute just on time at 6.30pm. After class at 8.30 I started back from the city to my town, and used to reach home by 10.30 by. Those were tiresome days and that routine continued for about 4 months. I had CAT exam just a day before my final year semester exams. I somehow managed to appear for the exam and did well too. Later, I attempted MAT and SNAP. I got a good result in MAT and I started applying for colleges. Finally, I secured a seat in Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies.
What I gained from my college experience
Initially I felt a little out of place as most of the people belonged to the North, and I was not very confident about conversing with them. This increased the fear in me but I faced all the challenges that life threw at me and stood firmly with confidence. Numerous activities were held in college that brought all the students together. Participating in these activities has made me a pretty confident person today.
I believe that holding experience is not the only thing that counts, but it is also the thinking ability that matters a lot.
I loved attending Marketing classes, and I chose it as my specialisation in the second year. This is the stage which I am currently living my life. There is a long way to go and I have a lot to achieve.
