AICTE observed that the affiliated organisations had the choice of either transforming all PGDM programmes into related MBA programmes with corresponding University affiliation or vice-versa and operate under an individual separate institute.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) informed that offering Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses in the same institution was "not permissible". The statutory body working under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, said this in a circular. The circular was pointed to key persons of a number of educational organisations. It also observed that the affiliated organisations had the choice of either transforming all PGDM programmes into related MBA programmes with corresponding University affiliation or vice-versa and operate under an individual separate institute. But an Institute cannot run both PGDM & MBA programmes all together.

AICTE controls engineering and technological education in the country. AICTE commenced PGDM courses to be run by Separate Institutes which were neither Universities nor affiliated to any University working similar to IIMs. Over a period of time, Central/State/Private Universities and Deemed to be Universities have added PGDM programme under the umbrella of "Management Programme" in violation of APH standards. The AICTE circular also demanded Central or State or Private Universities or Institutions Deemed to be Universities which are offering PGDM programme parallel to MBA under the banner of Management Programme to convert PGDM courses as MBA wholly and fulfill the AICTE standards.

Recently, the AICTE has streamlined the MBA course names to evade duplicity and redundancy. Colleges and institutions, affiliated to AICTE, were ordered to alter the nomenclature of the courses from the academic session 2020-2021. All MBA and PG Diploma courses have been categorised and renamed to 73 courses.
