At SPJIMR, ecommerce hired 22.2 per cent of the batch as compared to last year’s 16.3 per cent. Similary, ecommerce offers rose 14 per cent on-year at MDI. The increase can be ascribed to the surge in the number of startups participating in the placement process.

In this placement season, many eminent startups such as Zomato, Paytm, Oyo, Ola, and Quikr have been maintaining a distance. Nevertheless, several leading business schools have witnessed a surge in hiring by startups and ecommerce companies. During final placements for the class of 2020, Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s SPJIMR and Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode witnessed the biggest on-year jump in the number of offers.

At IIM-Kozhikode, 8.2 per cent of participating students got offers from ecommerce companies and startups than 3 per cent students of last year. At SPJIMR, ecommerce hired 22.2 per cent of the batch as compared to last year’s 16.3 per cent. Similarly, ecommerce offers rose 14 per cent on-year at MDI. The increase can be ascribed to the surge in the number of startups participating in the placement process.

Recruitment in certain roles
At IIM-Lucknow, 17.5 per cent of the 2020 batch received offers from ecommerce companies and startups, up from 15 per cent last year. Similarly, 16 per cent students got offers from startups this year against 14 per cent in 2019 at the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi. Even though many startups such as Oyo, Lenskart and Paytm stayed away from the placement this year, companies such as Grofers, Cloudtail, Swiggy, Amazon, Flipkart, and Go-MMT were among those who offer jobs to students. At certain business schools, even the likes of Oyo and Ola hired candidates. Ola hired at SPJIMR and IIM-Lucknow. On the other hand, Oyo was the largest ecommerce recruiter at MDI-Gurgaon.

Recruitment is going on for roles in product management, category management, as well as in business development and operations. MDI’s placements offers from ecommerce companies had balanced the low hiring in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) numbers at the institute.
