With rapid strides and huge investments made in Indian Healthcare System both by the government and the corporate world, there was a huge transition in provision of heathcare services in India. With the inclusion of technology, increase in beds, introduction of health insurance, a strong wave was seen to make healthcare more accessible and citizens centric. This was true for both private and government systems. The health care boom demanded need for greater number of trained healthcare professionals in India and this trend continues to rise. 

Administrative Staff College of India, popularly called as ASCI, was way ahead of its peers in perceiving the growing need of professional healthcare managers for running the affairs of the healthcare Industry in India. ASCI became a pioneer in starting Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Administration Course under the ages of Centre for Health Care Management, way back in 1998. This was at a time when the health care industry was not even aware of benefits of Hospital Administration Course and not many institutes offered it. This was done with a vision to meet the specialised challenges and the public demand of managing hospitals and public health affairs in a professional manner. ASCI started in collaboration with the Hinduja Group which also run the famous Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai as ASCI-Hinduja Institute of Health Care Management. There was an international collaboration with John Hopkins group and the course modules were developed by John Hopkins and faculty from all three combined i.e John Hopkins, Hindujas and ASCI trained the students in ASCI premises. The Course went further for recognition by the National Regulator of Technical Education Board i.e. the AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) in 2005.  The rigor to strengthen and promote this course was further intensified from the year 2015 onwards so as to meet the tremendous demand of trained hospital administrators in the Indian Industry. ASCI had become the preferred destination for medical and non-medical graduates who aspired of pursuing a management degree in hospital administration. 

The College

The College has been established in 1956 as the joint initiative of both the Government of India (GoI) and the industry. It is an autonomous, self-supporting, public-purpose institution, with the objectives of being a think tank for policy inputs and to build the capacities of practicing professionals in the management of government and business enterprises. 

ASCI is currently headed by Chairman Court of Governors Sri K Padmanabhaiah, IAS (Retd) and Director General Mr.Rajen Habib Khwaja IAS who have worked as former Home Secretary and former Secretary in the Ministries of Tourism and Mines to the Government of India, respectively.  The college is governed by an apex board called as Court of Governors which has eminent professionals, public figures and industry leaders in wide variety of fields and disciplines. 

College Faculty

There are 40 highly qualified faculties with varied backgrounds and rich experience of wide range of industries, working in three core areas of training, research and consultancy, gives ASCI distinct supremacy over its peers. The ASCI faculty along with their Research teams operate from 8 Centres of Management Areas. This functions along with a specialised Centre for Innovation in Public Systems (CIPS), established in ASCI premises by Government of India on recommendation by the Thirteen Finance Commission. CIPS works along with the various State Governments to develop a climate for accelerating and nurturing innovations in public systems and transform them in sustainable practices.

The multidisciplinary highly qualified and experienced faculty of the College which are also having a very strong industry exposure and are continuously involved in academic research and conducting training programmes for civil servants and working executives. The same faculty take sessions for students of PGDHM. The college faculty work very closely with the Government Departments across India and often involved students in their projects, thereby giving practical exposure to them. They along with leading industry experts like Hospital CEOs, Health Care IT experts, Public Health professionals, Hospital Planners etc are frequent visitors and often share their experiences and take sessions for students. Thus practical learning and applicability of concepts in simple language is kept as the main focus area. 

College Campus

The College campus is a Picturesque lush green campus in the heart of the city with well equipped air conditioned Wi Fi enabled lecture rooms, conference halls with computers and audio visual facilities. These are accompanied with air conditioned hostel rooms for PGDHM students with mess facilities, gym, swimming pool and facilities for sports like basket ball, badminton, table tennis, billiards, chess and tennis etc. 

Programme Structure and Pedagogy

PGDHM Course is of two years duration with 4 semesters. The curriculum is a good blend of class room teaching with practical exposure. This includes gaining understanding of MBA subjects but with application and emphasis on hospital and health industry. The class room teaching is frequented with experiential exercises, hospital observation visits in first semester, multiple practical trainings like 4 weeks live projects in second semester, 8 weeks summer training projects in third semester  and 16 weeks final internships in forth semester. They are facilitated by the college and are all done in hospitals/healthcare facilities all over India. There is also an extensive industry interface exposure for students designed in form of course modules/guest lectures by industry experts, student participation in industry conferences, participating in organising conferences in college etc. 

The Programme Modules in various semesters are designed as per the industry needs and feedback. The process is guided by Academic Advisory Board which is headed by legendary Shri Kakarla Subbarao, Renowned Padma Shri Awardee Founder Director of Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences.

The pedagogy of teaching subjects in ASCI is practical discussion sessions, exposure visits, experience sharing, simulation exercises, group discussions, trekking and project presentations. ASCI organise special extracurricular Events like management festivals, workshops, competitions, cultural programmes, get-togethers as well as sporting events etc. 

Placements

ASCI has an excellent track record in placement and is a preferred destination for recruiters for all over India. Organizations have been repeatedly coming year after year, impressed by the knowledge and skill sets of the ASCI students.
