It is being speculated that the total number of questions in CAT 2021 will be reduced from 76 to ease the pressure of exam for candidates. However, there is no official announcement about change in CAT exam pattern.

CAT exam pattern change?

It is being speculated that the total number of questions in CAT 2021 will be reduced from 76. The decrease in number of questions will be across the sections of CAT so that the weightage remains equally distributed.

Earlier, the CAT exam used to have 100 questions in total but in 2020, the number was reduced to 76 as the exam duration was reduced from three to two hours. There is no official communication about further reduction of the number of questions but there are speculations in the media that the number of questions may be lower than last year. The exam duration however, will remain same as announced in the CAT 2021 notification on July 31.

As the buzz grows about the change in CAT exam pattern, some experts are speculating a reduction of about 10 questions, i.e. the CAT 2021 question paper may have around 66 questions. Each section could see reduction of three to four questions. As per the latest CAT exam pattern, the VARC section has 26 questions, DILR section has 24 questions and Quantitative Aptitude section has 26 questions.

Given the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over yet and there are partial lockdowns and impositions in some states, the CAT exam preparation of many candidates must has been disturbed. In such a scenario, it is only fair to reduce the exam pressure. One may also expect change in type of questions this year, which can positively affect the performance of candidates.

IIM Ahmedabad, the CAT 2021 convening institute has always vouched for diversity in the MBA class-room, because of which its qualifying CAT cut off is often lower than the rest of IIMs. Earlier, in 2015, when IIM Ahmedabad has conducted the CAT exam, it had made some modifications in the exam to allow more and more students to perform better. It had introduced the on screen calculator and reduced the difficulty level of Quantitative Aptitude section to make it more non-Engineer friendly. It also reduced the number of grammar-based questions in VARC so that students from Engineering background could perform better in that section. As IIM Ahmedabad is conducting CAT 2021, candidates can expect the CAT exam to be more student friendly.

However, candidates should continue to practice CAT sample questions and mock test of the highest difficulty level and be prepared for any eventuality.
