NEET 2020 becomes entrance exam for MBBS admission to AIIMS & JIPMER
Medical aspirants will appear for only one entrance test, NEET, from the academic year 2020-21 to get admission in AIIMS and JIPMER. Both, JIPMER MBBS and AIIMS MBBS exams will cease to exist.
Union health ministry has announced that a single entrance test, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET, will be conducted for admissions to the undergraduate medical courses across the country, this would be true for all the colleges, including All India Insitute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER). With the implementation of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, a few changes in the existing medical admission process were expected. But the announcement from Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan came as both surprise and relief for the medical aspirants throughout the country.
The NEET had replaced the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and all the other private examinations in the year 2013. NEET was the only entrance test for admission to Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS) and AYUSH courses. However, as both AIIMS and JIPMER function under the Union health ministry, they conducted a separate entrance test up to the academic session 2019-20. But with the implementation of the Act, both AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER MBBS entrance tests will be abolished.
The National Medical Commission is also working on regularisation of the course fee for MBBS and bring uniformity in the fee structure. Efforts to push the Act and implement it from the academic session 2020-21 are being made by the Government.
