MBBS internship deadline extended by NMC AGAIN!

MBBS Internship Period Extended: The National Medical Commission (NMC) extended the internship period for medical (MBBS) students until May 31, 2021. Earlier, it was scheduled that the internship would be completed by March 31, 2021. However, the Commission had to intervene, rethink and extend the MBBS internship period after a protest demonstrated by the MBBS students in Karnataka last week. The reports suggest that their demands included a deadline for their internship. Now, the National Medical Commission issued guidelines for the completion of the internship post-COVID-19 lockdown.
The extension of the internship period is to compensate for the lost period of clinical-clerkship, or hands-on training, during the COVID-19 lockdown. The Commission also instructed medical colleges across the country to take steps for reopening medical colleges before December 1, 2020, amid the ongoing pandemic situation considering the loss of studies the students had to bear due to the closure of the academic institutions. The guidelines for the institutes to hold internship programme say that the institute must release a revised internship schedule for their students, colleges and individual departments must ensure that trainees acquire key clinical competencies and that it is the responsibility of the institutes to see that the interns complete their training satisfactorily. Post completion of the internship programme, students will be issued internship completion certificates.
