The Centre has given its permission to Tamil Nadu for an additional 850 MBBS seats at seven of its new government medical colleges.

Ma Subramanian, Health Minister of Tamil Nadu, said that the Central government has given a go-ahead for an additional 850 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery) seats in the seven new medical colleges in the state. The total medical seats in the state will now increase to 4,300.

He said that out of 11 new government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, the colleges at Kalaikurichi, Udhagamandalam, and Virudhunagar had been granted permission to admit 150 students and the colleges at Tiruvallur, Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, and Tiruppur can admit 100 students each.

Last year, the state had asked permission to start 11 new medical colleges with 150 seats each. This year, in August, a team of the National Medical Commission (NMC) was sent for inspections of laboratories, general wards, hostel facilities and to find out the number of trained doctors, professors and teachers of these colleges. These colleges will mostly have 700 to 750 beds.

The Indian Express quoted Subramanian, “The inspection team brought out minor deficiencies at the colleges in Dindigul, Krishnagiri, Nagapattinam and Ariyalur. Most of the colleges that need to be repaired will require civil work and are expected to be completed in ten days.”

“We will rectify all the minor deficiencies in 10-15 days. The Union government has now approved the admission of 850 students. The total number of 1,650 seats should be approved at these 11 colleges. We expect to get approval for the remaining number of seats by October-end after a re-inspection will be undertaken by the team,” he added.

Moreover, Tamil Nadu will seek the Centre's permission to add 50 seats each in Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Tiruvallur and Tiruppur.
