TN awaits NMC nod for MBBS seats in four proposed medical colleges
Tamil Nadu is waiting for the NMC nod for MBBS seats in four proposed medical colleges.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has concluded its virtual inspections for approving MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats in the four proposed medical colleges as confirmed by the state health minister Ma Subramanian.
Tamil Nadu has urged the Centre to approve an increase in seats from 150 to 200 in Coimbatore Government Medical Colleges (GMC).
Moreover, to increase MBBS seats from 100 to 150 in the four new medical colleges, the Directorate of Medical Education has submitted a compliance report. If the commission gives its approval, the state will add a minimum of 600 more MBBS seats in addition to the 850 seats approved by the Centre for admission in the current academic year.
"We have been told the inspection committee is satisfied with our compliance. I will be visiting Delhi with senior officials on Wednesday. We will request the Centre to give us permission to admit students to all 11 new medical colleges from the current academic year," said Subramanian, as reported by TOI.
Recently, in September, the Centre approved Tamil Nadu to admit 850 students to undergraduate medical courses in seven new GMCs from this academic year and three colleges in Ooty, Kallakurichi, and Virudhunagar received permission to start admission with 150 students each. Also, four medical colleges in Tirupur, Tiruvallur, Ramanathapuram, and Namakkal got permission to admit 100 students each.
As per NMC data, out of 553 medical colleges in the country, Tamil Nadu has 52-26 colleges in the government and private sector that provides 8,025 MBBS seats.
