ICAI has transitioned to three exam shifts in one year. This shift by ICAI has sparked speculation about a similar change for the ICMAI and its CMA exams. Currently, CMA exams are also held twice a year

ICMAI CMA Exam Pattern

CA Exams to be Held Thrice a Year; Will ICMAI CMA Follow the Frequency Change?

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced a significant change in its exam frequency. Starting May/June 2024, Intermediate and Foundation course exams will be held thrice a year – May/June, September, and January – compared to the previous twice-a-year schedule. The CA Final course exams will still be held twice annually in May and November.

This shift by ICAI has sparked speculation about a similar change for the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) and its CMA (Certified Management Accountant) exams. Currently, CMA exams are also held twice a year.

Potential Benefits for CMA Aspirants

If ICMAI follows the trend and adopts a thrice-yearly exam schedule, CMA aspirants could benefit in several ways:

  • Increased Flexibility: Three exams per year would provide candidates with more opportunities to appear for exams. This could be particularly helpful for those who might miss an exam due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Faster Course Completion: Passing exams more frequently could allow aspirants to complete the CMA course quicker. This would expedite their entry into the profession.
  • Improved Scheduling: With more exams, candidates could potentially plan their studies and exam attempts more effectively, aligning them with their personal and professional commitments.

How can Tri-Annual CMA Exams Increase Pass Percentage?

In the past CMA exam term conducted in December 2023 session, more than 56000 candidates appeared for the CMA intermediate course, 4374 completed the Intermediate level under the 2016 syllabus and 1474 under the 2022 syllabus.

Similarly, more than 16000 candidates appeared for the CMA Final course, out of which 1175 candidates completed under the 2016 syllabus, while 392 finished under the 2022 syllabus. Currently, ICMAI conducts the CMA exam twice annually. By transitioning to a triannual format, it is anticipated that the number of candidates completing the CMA program each year will increase significantly.

While the possibility of a change in ICMAI's exam frequency remains to be seen, the ICAI's decision could pave the way for a similar shift in the CMA program, potentially offering significant advantages for aspiring CMAs.
