All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda has rolled out a centre of excellence for medical professionals.

For upgrading the medical practitioners' skills in handling patient care, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda has inaugurated a centre of excellence (CoE) in the health sector.

The initiative was conceptualised when India was going through the deadly second wave of the Covid 19 pandemic. The first of its kind project is funded by the Union ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship and the Punjab government has established an alliance with AIIMS to upgrade the skills of medical and paramedical professionals.

Cabinet Minister Rana Gurjeet Singh has confirmed that under this project, 31 nurses in the first batch are being trained as respiratory therapists. These nurses will be trained in handling basic management of the intensive care unit (ICU) and ventilators, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Under this project, AIIMS Bathinda is going to train 260 qualified nurses in respiratory therapy within a year without charging them any fee and expenses of food, lodging, and boarding as all these expenses will be funded by the Central government.

The nurses with diplomas and degrees with two-year nursing experience with Punjab domicile are eligible for this training.

AIIMS Bathinda was an initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) in July 2014 and it was formally established and became functional in 2019. The institute offers 50 MBBS seats including 24 for General category students, eight for SC (Scheduled Castes), 14 for OBC, four for ST (Scheduled Tribes) and two seats for persons with disabilities (PwBD).
