AP govt makes one-year service in rural areas mandatory for PG medical students

The state government has passed an order which stated that from now onwards, it is compulsory for PG medical students to provide one year of rural/government service. The new order will apply to the post-graduate/super speciality students admitted in government medical colleges under state quota and Category-A seats in private medical colleges from the academic year 2022-2023.

The order has been issued by the Andhra Pradesh medical and health department to address the lack of specialist doctors at secondary and tertiary healthcare levels, as reported by News Meter.

The medical students will be paid an honorarium and their services will be utilized in the health institutions of Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhana Parishad on first priority." The services of the remaining students, if any, shall be utilized in the health institutions of the Director of Medical Education," the order read.

The principal secretary to the government, MT Krishna Babu, said, "The fresh specialist graduates will have more chances to handle cases and take decisions independently. This is simultaneously very useful to the patients in the rural and tribal areas of the state."

Andhra Pradesh Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare Vidadala Rajini recently said on the status of medical colleges, "A total allocation of INR 7,880 crore has been made for the 16 colleges, including INR 550 crore for the one proposed to be set up at Machilipatnam, INR 525 crore for the college at Eluru, INR 505 crore for the college at Bapatla, INR 500 crore each for the medical colleges at Paderu, Piduguralla, Pulivendula, Vizianagaram and Narsipatnam and INR 475 crores each for the colleges at Amalapuram, Rajahmundry, Palakollu, Markapur, Madanapalli, Penukonda, Adoni and Nandyal."
