With India reeling under COVID19 pandemic, the Delhi University (DU) is considering to conduct DU admissions 2021 based on the combined performance of students in the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) as well as board exams for its undergraduate courses, according to officials.

Even though the weightage of the two scores in determining the eligibility of candidates is yet to be decided, reports suggest that 50 per cent of the weightage will be given to Class 12th boards while the other 50 per cent to CUCET score.

With the fate of board exams being uncertain, some universities may introduce changes in admission policy amid Covid19 pandemic. “We have not yet decided if we will go ahead with only the entrance exam. We may provide 100 per cent weightage to CUCET score but DU admissions will continue to be merit-based; however, the criteria may get changed on the basis of CBSE’s decision on board exams,” said PC Joshi, pro-VC, DU.

Admissions to Delhi University are characterised by sky-high cut-offs every year. Last year, Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) had 100 percent cut-offs for its three programmes, and 30 courses across DU colleges had cut-offs over 99 percent.

About CUCET

CUCET, introduced by Ministry of Education (MoE), is expected to be a single exam for admissions to undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes in 41 central universities. Applicants will need to fill an online form and appear for the test.

The Education Ministry had announced CUCET in the new National Education Policy (NEP). A committee has also been formed to recommend modalities for the high-quality aptitude tests in the sciences, humanities, languages, arts, and vocational subjects, at least twice every year.

These exams shall test conceptual understanding. Students shall be able to choose the subjects for taking the test, and each university will be able to see student's individual subject portfolio and admit students into their programmes based on individual interests and talents.

However, Amit Khare, secretary for higher education in the ministry told that this year, the CUCET will only be conducted once for admission to just undergraduate courses.

The CUCET 2021 exam is yet to be announced and the notification is likely to be released in early June.
