Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated six model schools with an aim to provide educational facilities to children of tea garden workers of the state. Meanwhile, 90 more schools have started academic activities. Sarma inaugurated the schools at Ghagra, Rupajuli, Sonajuli, Thakurbari and Fulbari tea gardens in Sonitpur district. The schools will be named after prominent personalities.

The authorities have appointed eight teachers for each school. “For the first time since Independence, schools have been set up in the tea gardens for the children of the garden workers and this will herald a new era of quality education for their children,” the chief minister said.
Schools to teach social science subject in Assamese
The minister informed that these children used to study in nearby lower primary schools and a majority of them dropped out in higher classes, as they had to travel a distance from the tea garden areas where their parents worked, he said. “These 'Adarsh Vidyalayas' will offer higher secondary courses from next year and in the next few years, we will set up colleges, covering three to four tea gardens,” Sarma said.
According to the vision of the government, these model schools will impart mathematics and science lessons in English from 2023. Meanwhile, social science subject will be taught in Assamese, which will be also taught as a language paper, he said. This move will enable students to explore the world and learn in their own language
