BFUHS VC Dr Raj Bahadur's resignation gets accepted

The Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has accepted the resignation of the vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences Dr Raj Bahadur.

The resignation is reportedly forwarded to the Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit for final approval and the director, of medical education, will hold the additional charge of Vice-Chancellor till the appointment of a new VC, said the sources in the chief minister’s office (CMO), as reported by Hindustan Times.

The Background

Dr Raj Bahadur resigned after the incident that happened on July 29, when the health minister S Chetan Singh Jauramajra was on rounds and inspecting Faridkot's Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, which comes under BFUHS. The minister reportedly behaved rudely with the VC and forced him to lie on a dirty mattress at the hospital in front of hospital staff.

A video of the incident also circulated on social media where the health minister can be seen placing a hand on the veteran surgeon's shoulder as he pointed toward the "damaged and dirty condition" of the mattress inside the hospital's skin department.

Following the incident, the VC felt humiliated because of the minister's behaviour and reportedly informed the CM that this kind of atmosphere was not conducive to his work and requested him to relieve him of his duties.

Earlier, many doctors associations including Indian Medical Association (IMA) demanded the resignation of the Punjab Health Minister for misbehaving with Dr Raj Bahadur.
