Under the Central Sector Scheme of Kendriya Vidyalayas, the government has sanctioned the creation of 85 new schools in the Civil/Defence sector. Along with this, an expansion of Kendriya Vidyalaya Shivamogga is planned to address the increasing demand for educational services in the district.
Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across the country. Additionally, one existing KV—Kendriya Vidyalaya Shivamogga in Karnataka—will be expanded to accommodate a growing number of students. This decision aims to ensure that quality education is accessible to the children of government employees in various regions.
The expansion will include the addition of two additional sections in each class, allowing more students to enroll.
The total estimated cost for the establishment of the 85 new KVs and the expansion of one existing school stands at INR 5,872.08 crore over a period of eight years, starting from 2025-26. This amount includes capital expenditure of approximately INR 2,862.71 crore and operational expenditure of INR 3,009.37 crore.
Educational Reach: Benefiting Thousands of Students
Currently, there are 1,256 functional KVs across India, including three international KVs in Moscow, Kathmandu, and Tehran, catering to over 13.56 lakh students. With the addition of the new KVs, around 82,560 students will benefit from these educational facilities, based on the typical capacity of each KV, which accommodates approximately 960 students.
Employment Opportunities Generated by the Expansion
The expansion and establishment of the new Kendriya Vidyalayas will not only improve educational access but also create a significant number of employment opportunities. As per established norms, each fully functional Kendriya Vidyalaya employs about 63 individuals. The opening of 85 new KVs and the expansion of one existing KV will result in the creation of 5,388 direct permanent employment opportunities. Furthermore, construction and allied activities will generate additional employment for skilled and unskilled workers, contributing to local economies.
The Evolution of Kendriya Vidyalayas: Serving the Needs of Central Government Employees
Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) were initially established in 1962 under the Government of India to cater to the educational needs of children of transferable central government employees. The scheme was launched to ensure a uniform standard of education for the children of central government, defence, and paramilitary personnel who often face relocations. The first 20 Regimental Schools in defence stations were taken over as Central Schools in 1963-64.
Over time, Kendriya Vidyalayas have become highly regarded for their quality education and excellent infrastructure. Today, they are primarily intended to serve the children of central government, defence, and paramilitary forces employees, as well as those living in remote and underserved regions. The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has further strengthened the role of KVs as PM Shri Schools, setting a high standard for education across the country.
Achievements and Recognition of Kendriya Vidyalayas
KVs are recognized for their innovative teaching methods, modern infrastructure, and outstanding academic results. The increasing number of applicants for class I admissions and the consistently top-notch performance of students in CBSE board exams attest to the high regard these schools hold in the education sector. As PM Shri Schools, they serve as exemplary institutions that showcase the successful implementation of NEP 2020.
