CBSE allows Class X Basic Mathematics students to take Applied Mathematics in Class XI

Students who have passed Basic Mathematics (241) in class X will be allowed to take the new academic elective ‘Applied Mathematics (241)’ at the Senior Secondary Level.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to introduce ‘Applied Mathematics (241)’ as Academic Elective for class XI in the academic year 2020-21. Human Resource and Development Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishak, in his latest tweets, announced that in order to help students develop an understanding of basic mathematical and statistical tools and also to help them understand its application in various field, he has advised CBSE to make this addition in the mathematic subject from the academic year 2020-21 onwards.

In a thread of multiple tweets, Mr Pokhriyal further stated that the new addition in the curriculum will also help in boosting the students’ competency skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, logical reasoning, mathematical thinking, etc.

The HRD minister added that students who have passed Basic Mathematics (241) in class X will be allowed to take the new academic elective ‘Applied Mathematics (241)’ at Senior Secondary Level.

CBSE released an official notification to declare the introduction of ‘Applied Mathematics (241)’ as an Academic Elective at Senior Secondary Level. The official press release states that ‘the decision is taken after observing that  the existing syllabus of Mathematics aligns well with Science subjects, but does not align well with Commerce or Social Science-based subjects in University education.’

The addition will develop the students’ basic mathematical and statistical tool understanding but will also help students to develop mathematical knowledge who are seeking to build a career in different fields.

However, the press release also states that students who want to opt for higher studies in Mathematics at the university level as an Elective or want to take admission in Mathematics Honours course or Engineering Course may take Mathematics (041).
