CBSE stated that it is introducing three new subjects - 'Design-thinking', 'Physical Activity Trainer' and 'Artificial Intelligence' for class 11 considering the New Education Policy 2019.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to make the upcoming generation more creative, innovative and physically fit. Also, to help the generation keep pace with the global developments and requirements at the workplace, the CBSE is introducing three new subjects at Class 11 from the new academic session 2020-2021. In an official statement, the Board stated that it is introducing three new subjects - 'Design-thinking', 'Physical Activity Trainer' and 'Artificial Intelligence' for class 11 considering the New Education Policy 2019 which states that there should be "no hard separation" between curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular or academic and vocational/physical education/art, etc.
Along with these new programmes, to upgrade the skills and proficiency of the young generation and to help them explore different career options, CBSE is already offering 17 Skill subjects at Secondary level and 37 Skill Subjects at Senior Secondary level.
The Board has requested the CBSE affiliated schools to start choosing any one or more Skill courses for the students of Classes 9 and 11 and start offering the same from the academic session 2020-21 onwards.
The official press release regarding the introduction of the three new skill-based courses by CBSE states, ‘While Thinking is a skill that all humans possess, the 21st-century requirement is of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. Design Thinking is a systematic process of thinking that opens up the horizons of creativity and enables even the most conditioned thinkers to bring about new and innovative solutions to the problem/s at hand.’
Schools may offer the skill-based subject as an additional sixth subject for the Secondary level along with the existing five compulsory subjects. According to the existing policy of CBSE, the sixth skill-based subject can replace any one of the three elective subjects (i.e. Science, Mathematics and Social Science) if any student fails in any one of the elective subjects. However, the students can reappear in the failed subject along with the compartment examination.
